I have a hanging fern on my porch. Mother Robin decided to make her nest in the center of it. Now we have to be quiet when leaving the house until the babies leave the nest. They have a good mother, though kind of dumb making her nest there. laugh

Hi John:

Thanks for sharing the photo. I have it "on good authority"... Robin's love Piano Concertos and Panera Bread. Ferns in PA seem to have much broader leaves than our Southern varieties... but pretty, nonetheless. Cheers... ---Dave

I'll keep update photos of this here everyone. Wy, my son took the picture (but I cropped it). I'll keep the music in mind Dave. Maybe a version of "The Red, Red Robin". Don't worry about snakes Mike. I doubt a snake will be able to maneuver such obstacles. Though there is a friendly garter snake that lives under my porch. He’s very cautious because of all the cats in the area.

I have a bird, not sure what type, that makes a nest on top of our outdoor ceiling fan. So, when it's warm we cannot use the fan. I have put a rubber snake up there, they knocked it down. I've painted it sky blue, didn't work. Just gave them a fresh coat of paint to poop on. They poop on our patio furniture and the floor, it's getting on my nerves. No, I won't just pitch the nest while there're eggs but after they leave the nest...I'm getting some barbed wire and gonna build a tiny fence and put up a no trespassing sign! lol

Hey Caroline:

I would immediately suspect two different types of bird "culprits." First, maybe what we used to call "English Sparrows"... (very messy nest usually made up of weeds, chicken feathers and trash)... and then there is the House Wren that is very people oriented and builds nests in the strangest places. Mailboxes, Door wreaths or decorations, window sills or corners of ledges on interior porches. Much neater than sparrows and they have a wide variety of little chirping calls, trills and melodies. (Sparrows don't have much of a repertoire... just an annoying "cheep!"... and they don't care where they poop!)

Good luck getting rid of them. Sometimes a figurine of an owl will keep them away. Wal-Mart sells them infrequently... they even have a version with a battery operated, moving head.

----Dave

Yeah, they're slivery creatures Mike. The only snakes I've seen around here are garter snakes.

Well, they obviously trust you John, or they wouldn't be there. Speaking of snakes, last year about this time I saw a Garter snake ball on my daily hike. It literally looked like a half deflated basketball. Probably a couple of hundred snakes involved. I didn't notice them until they moved when I walked by.

I equate it with the prom, they all got new skins on and are partying it up for future generations. The next day I brought my camera but they had left.

At any rate, keep the cats away.

A hanging plant a nesting place
A “dumb” move I think not
The mommy’s quite a clever bird
She found a perfect spot
For squirrels can navigate a branch
They have such expertise
But teetering on hanging plants
They wouldn’t do with ease
And so these four blue robin’s eggs
Might have a safer home
If they were high up in a tree
Squirrels might not leave alone
They’re nestled well within the fern
A perfect hiding place
And I believe the greenery
Might help to keep them safe
This picture’s worth a thousand words
A springtime work of art
No I don’t think the mommy’s dumb
In fact, she’s rather smart
Besides while they’re developing
They’ll hear what you compose
The melodies you play so well
Will calm them as they grow!!

Interesting read Everyone! Thanks for the beautiful poem Lynn. Sandra and I love it. Momma Robin doesn’t leave the nest much anymore. When I leave the house she crouches down. Probably thinks I can’t see her. She’s a good momma.

Hi John,

What lovely little visitors for your fern!
That's special!

Last year, we had a big snail living in our fern. I brought the fern in and I thought the snail was gone. However, in March, we found him escaping, on the living room floor! I didn't realize he'd lived there all winter!

Post pictures when the babies are born!!

Yes Lisa, I'll post photos when they arrive. Should be another week. Mother's on her own and taking good care of her precious eggs. Though I'm watching caringly.

Yes, seeing nature first had is amazing. That momma robin is never far away. Most the time sitting on the eggs. I like how she crouches down in the nest when I open my door. Probably thinks I can't see her then.

Still waiting for momma bird to leave the nest. She's glued to it today. Probably all four of my grandkids are hatched by now. Yes, a proud grandpa I is... laugh

Remarkable... the daddy robin keeps bringing worms to momma in the nest. Now that's a good husband and dad.

Has Gummo made the scene yet? If he doesn't hurry up, his big brothers and sisters will be able to stretch their necks higher and he may go hungry!! smile

If I were sitting in an egg and got wind of the fact that my name was going to be "GUMMO" ... I'd refuse to hatch too!

What Lisa? Gummo's a fine respectable name for a mountain bird. Much better than sissy names like Elwood or Arnold. Though I could name him John after me. smile

Gummo is a good name smile It's, uh, "distinctive " A name should be distinctive. Course, John's name isn't very distinctive but he's quite distinctive in, uh, "Other" ways. smile

But you have to consider the possibility that it may not hatch--They don't always all hatch

Yeah, I starting to think that Wy. Though all the eggs came on different days. I think there was a 2-3 day wait for egg number 4. I'll keep watch.

No change today. Still one un-hatched egg. Not looking good for Gummo. The babies were lying on top the egg this morning. Thought it was hatched, but it's still there. Maybe an unfertilized egg, though rare in the wild.

Don't feel bad Lisa. Probable wasn't a fertilized egg to begin with. Though I'd like to see Gummo join the flock.
