Well,
You can do two or three things. Replace the foam your self, see if you can find a repair service or replace the speakers. A few years ago I had the same problem with speakers I bought in 1987. I simply called the factory and bought new speakers. I think the main problem is aligning the movement correctly when you replace the foam.

yeah Ray,i found an easy looking video from www.simplyspeakers.com on how to do it but nothing ever works out that easy for me.Going with a new woofer may be the answer but i want it the same as the vintage one if i can.

I went back to look what I did with my speakers. They are Boston Acoustics Model A 70 of which are about the same as your EPI 100's.
It was November 2005 almost 10 years ago I replaced the Speakers. I paid $100.00 Postpaid for the pair. I see on the Web Site they have about the same 8" 8 Ohm Speaker for 49.95 or so. The repair kits are 24.95 or so. So what do you have to lose! As mentioned above, the concern is making sure the speaker floats free after you install the new foam and does not bind. Have fun!

I went back to the site looking at Wolfers They have one Part number W-208.8 that looks good for 29.95 each. Might fit the bill.

Hey Mike,

I still have a pair of EPI M50's that I purchased in 1973. I always figured I'd wire my garage for music. Haven't done it yet...

I was reminded buy a friend that i had a pair of EPI's in the 70's,i can picture them but i don't remember which ones they were.I do remember going into the sound room [which don't exist anymore around here]and sitting there listening to Zappa,Gino Vinelli and Pink Floyd trying to decide which ones to get.I don't even know what happened to that pair.

So Michael,
Did you get the replacement's and how did they work out? I see that there are a lot of similar speakers for sale on E bay. If someone was looking for a good set of speakers that needed the drivers replaced or repaired it may be a lot cheaper than buying new speakers. My A 70's sound good.

I've head the EPI 100 is an awesome old speaker, audiophile-approved, and easy to find used. I nearly got a pair off craigslist too...looking to beef up a couple rooms with some big vintage sound.

yeah Mark, for a bookshelf speaker they are awesome.way better than the newer pair i was listening through. It reminds me of when you could go to a sound room back in the day and listen to different speakers. That's how i picked out my first EPI's.I'm gonna be playing a whole lotta vinyl!

Congrats Michael,
Having read numerous Speaker Reviews over the years in Audio Magazines the small Two Way Speakers such as your EPI's have plenty of good sound. With today's more powerful Amps you don't need anything more.

I just picked up an old Wharfedale 3-way to beef up my kitchen sound...massive weight because of sand-filled walnut sides. I love old 60s/70s gear.

well,
Since Michael Posted his info about the Epicure Speakers I have been looking for similar Speakers that were manufactured and sold around the same time. There were AR, Acoustic Research, the first sealed box speakers that allowed somewhat better bass response. I had a pair of AR4X speakers. Also there were KLH Speakers, Wharfdale, Advent, and maybe a few others. If you are looking for a good set of speakers anyone of them will do and you may be able to find them at budget prices in Pawnshops or on E-Bay. At the time all of those speakers were made 100 watt amps were either non existent or rare or expensive. You can drive anyone of them with a 100 watt receiver/amp for a basically good sound. You can also get repair parts for any of them at SIMPLY SPEAKERS or perhaps other places. Good hunting!

I had a couple of floor model EPI's I bought in the mid 70's. They were awesome. But way too big. I downsized my system in the mid 90's. I went with Sony CD player, mixer and power amp. Kept my old turntable.

While waiting for new replacement speakers, I hooked up the old EPI's to the new Sony sys. Because the new system was under powered, the speakers started smoking and caught fire. Excitement.

Humm,
Rick sounds like the crossover circuts cooked in the speakers. You can get complete replacement parts for most speaker systems or good substitutes. Believe it or not, the average listening volume for a stereo system is from 1 1/2 to 3 watts. A lot of speakers in the earlier years recommended wattage for an amp was 10 to 50 watts. You don't listen at full volume of which would drive you nuts at those volume settings. I usually buy a receiver that delivers around 100 watts, into 8 ohms, both channels driven. There are plenty on the market. Just Google them.
