I received an email this morning from my song plugger in Nashville stating that Luke Bryan's manager called him saying that she really likes my song "A Patient Man", so she is going to play it for Luke. Keeping my fingers crossed that Luke will like it as well.

That's wonderful news Marvin. I listened to the song on your soundclick site. It sounds great. May I ask where you had the demo done and who the singer is? I'm trying to broaden my horizons. Congrats,

Thanks everyone. Ricki I have my demos done now at Brent Rader studio in Nashville. I can hook you up if you want to try it. Michael...what part of Louisiana are you from? My grandparents use to own a farm in Rodessa, Louisiana and I spent a lot of time there as a kid. I still have a lot of relation in the Shreveport area.

I love Luke's voice. It's so distinctive that you know it's him right away on country radio. I'm not surprised Marvin that they'll give a listen. You write very well and commercially but not without heart.

Thanks so much Lynn, and Michael you are correct....they were great people! A lot of my writing is from reflections of my youth in Louisiana. The song that I have posted in the mp3 forums "Too Good To Be Forgot" was written specifically about my grandma and grandpa, and my youth spent in Rodessa.

Best,
Marvin

Best of luck with this pitching opportunity, Marvin. It is a great deal like "fishing" and you never know if the "bait" is what the "fish" desires. Hopefully, you songplugger is doing all the "leg work" thus allowing you to tend to the creative side.

Rodessa, if I remember correctly is near the Texas line between Atlanta, Texas and Vivian. I was raised in Texarkana, a little further north. My brother now lives at Caddo Lake not far from Rodessa. The only natural lake in Texas, I'm told. The rest are reservoirs. Cypress trees, Aligators, a great variety of birds, wildlife and Lilly Pads as large as a Helicopter Landing Site. Caddo Lake is almost like a trip back into prehistoric times.

All my best,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Yep that is where Rodessa is. I used to ride with my grandpa in his old pickup taking animals to the livestock sales in Texarkana as a kid. Vivian is the closest town of any size so we went there all the time. I have not been back since my father passed away and I was made the executor for selling the small farm just outside of Rodessa.

The song sounds ready for the market.

Michael,

That is exactly the way I have always pronounced it, and actually my grandpa's mother (my great-grandma) was full Caddo, so I carry the bloodline on. Something I have always been very proud of.

Mornin' Marvin:

I was amazed to discover you have Caddo blood flowing in your veins. Years ago, as I recall there was a live Caddo Village (at least that is what they advertised) near Murfreesboro, Arkansas. I always assumed it was a "tourist trap" but have always had an interest in what became of this tribe, famous for their pottery and spread out over such a large region.

Were they sent to reservations or simply assimilated? My great-grandmother was no longer living by the time I would have been old enough to make her acquaintance. I hope you were able to spend time with yours... and thus learn more about the Caddo Culture. (I hope I have not lead you to believe I have Indian blood... but I would be proud if that were the case.)

My father studied the many Indian Cultures and Tribes and passed that interest on to me and my brother. He was a great admirer of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce.

Keep us posted when you know the "fate" of "A Patient Man."

Best regards,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately I never knew my great-grandmother, but my grandfather being half indian was quite a character.

I will let you all know if anything becomes of "A Patient Man". It's still one heck of a long shot, but it's a shot.

Got a text this morning from Lukes manager saying "pass on song, if you have anything else, drop it by my office. Not exactly the news I wanted to get, but I was not in the least surprised. That's the nature of the game.

Marvin,

AS weird as it sounds, that is actually a very high compliment to actually get a call. 99.99% of the time, the only way you find out you didn't get a cut is to wait till the record comes out and find your name NOT ON IT! That actually happened to me on a song of mine Patti Loveless actually recorded but didn't make the final cut on her album.

You usually just don't find out anything. So congratulations of getting that far and impressing people enough to call you.

Marc,

Thanks for the encouragement. That actually happened to me as well on Charlie Pride's last album. Charlie recorded a song of mine, but it didn't make the final cut. The only way I found out was after the album came out.

Hey Marvin:

Dang... that had to be disappointing. Marc hit the nail on the head, though! Most publishers, artists or producers simply drop a CD in the old round file and never respond. At least they invited you to send more.

I'd love to hear the song Charlie Pride recorded... even if it didn't make the final cut. You are headed in the right direction, my friend.

Best,

Dave

Sorry but that sounds like a good title...I'LL PASS ON THIS SONG...there is a cool double entendre there.....

I like it!!

Hey Marvin at least it was considered. The last song that anybody considered to pass on was to pass it on to the Junk Heap....lol

I know you feel bad. I'd love to hear the songs he has accepted. There are SO Many good songs. For somebody like him I think it needs a catchy chorus obviously BUT the story has to be unique....some really neat unusual story OR just some song about Drunks, Trucks, Girls and an STD.....lol
Hang in there...

Thanks Dave and Barry, I appreciate it.

Dave the name of the Charlie Pride song is "Look At the Love We're In", and I will paste the link below to the demo if you still care to listen. I asked Charlie's office if I could hear the recording he had done, but they would not allow it. Supposedly in case they want to use it on his next album, but I'm not holding my breath for that cut either.

Barry I think you nailed it. Not to many artists right now are recording "Real Life" songs. Most are recording partying songs because that is what sells. Sad but true.

Hi again, Marvin:

Thanks for the link. Great country song. So much better than what we must endure on most "clear channel" stations these days. I made it a policy to switch them off a few years ago. Fortunately, there are still country stations that play the real country songs and we have a couple in our neck of the woods.

I noticed you had a co-writer on "Look at the Love We're In" and that you two "ponied up" and had a male and female version demoed. Smart! I have read that several of the most successful songwriters (obviously guys and gals who've hit the big time) get two or three versions of songs demoed if they are seriously pitching them. Doubling down like that would be nice but I can't bring myself to cough up my hard-earned cash.

An acquaintance of mine in Texarkana had 27 songs demoed and paid more than $700 bucks for each one. Most of the songs were radio ready to my ears... but at last count... he is batting zero with them. Thank goodness he had a day job and that's been about ten years ago.

Keep at it my friend... you will make it!

Dave

It needs to be a very unique story line....and I think they will. Miranda sang THIS HOUSE THAT BUILT ME....not her own and won song of the year....A wonderful song and video. I have a better one called FAMILY REUNION....but my wife and best friend are the only one who have heard it and like it....Sometimes I feel invisible....Like I'm screaming as loud as I can and ALL I hear is the sound of my OWN VOICE....lol

Oh Well.....I have my barrydbutler channel on youtube with 350 songs to leave for the cosmos for free to anybody in the next 100 years that stumble across one of them. Put a new one up last week and also use sound click. I'm 69 and have cancer and just want to leave a footprint and a legacy that I was here....Being cremated and No Obit....My Youtube page is my Legacy and damn proud of it.

Good luck next time....If you ever struggle with a lyric or melody give me a holler....B

Hi Barry:

First, let me tell you that "I Feel Your Pain!" Songwriting from the bottom of the pyramid is just about the loneliest thing a person can do. The good news: If it makes you happy... keep on writing, singing, producing, editing, engineering, marketing and all the other tasks required to "move the brand forward."

I don't have to tell you to "believe in yourself!" You obviously do... and that is one of the "essentials" we must possess if we are ever going to make it. Time is not on our side but I look at Marvin's example and it certainly gives me hope.

Marvin, forgive me for "hi-jacking" your thread... but I always want to do my best to keep up the spirits of our fellow JPF participants.

Barry, since titles cannot be copyrighted... proceed with vigor on both of your song ideas... LOL! I wrote one called, "I Feel Your Pain" and a buddy of mine at "The Ramp" really gave me a swift kick in the pants about it. I did my best not to take it personal... but I'd be a liar if I said I enjoyed his assessment of my work... LOL! (I still think it's a good song... maybe not marketable... but hey, we can't all be millionaires.)

As Ray Strode says, "Keep Writing!"

All my best,

Dave

Barry, yes, back in the 70's there was a rash of "WORK and JOB" songs starting with Johnny Paycheck's "TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT". Artists like Razzy Baily, Joe Stamply, David Allen Coe, and many other of the "rebel country stars" had many of those type songs. I do remember one called "Don't Quit Your Day job' that was some obscure song around that time.
But have heard the title used a couple hundred times. Most of the titles people toss around on sites like these are actually done a lot but people do "google or title' searches and a lot don't show up because they just never made it to a point of needing to be registered. They actually end up being written by a lot of newer writers who don't write them very well and they kind of ruin the title for everyone. I have known of many songs that were rejected by the title alone, just because it had been written so much.

House that Built Me was a great song and story. Took nearly 13 years to get cut and was not actually pitched to Miranda. It was pitched to Blake who had it for a while before he played it for her. She grew up in Texas in a very run down ramshackle house when her parent's business went through hard times and they nearly became homeless. She identified highly with the song, and when she did it, it softened her tone from the "ANGRY CHICK SINGER'and put her not only on every awards show, every magazine cover and another tax bracket, but refocused her career.

Allen Shamblin and Tom Douglas wrote that one and are both amazing writers. Great song. The defition of how to say the same thing we've heard a billion times, differently.

Sorry Marvin, another good song that got over looked while we listen to so many mediocre songs on radio everyday that say nothing but party, drink and have sex and drive pickup trucks. I hope they are not doing all that at the same time.LOL

Thanks Everett, but I am not upset. I was expecting the song to be passed on for the very reason you just stated. I could write what is more commercial for today's market, but I choose what I do and hope the market will change soon.

Hey Marvin....your next song should be

LUKE BRYAN TURNED DOWN THIS ( MY ) SONG

Hey Taylor really got her start with her song TIM McGraw.....
How clever was that?.....lol

She is a smart cookie who writes simple and catchy songs and KNOWS her Audience. My only worry for her ( like she really needs my worry...lol ) is that she grows WITH her audience or expands her subject matter.....the public is very fickle....and at her age....and Success....WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?

Eh, Well,
Back in about 1995 I sent some songs to a Female Artist, maybe Suzy Boggus. At that time they asked for a SASE if they passed on your song. I never heard from them but she put out an Album maybe Entitled: Give Me Some Wheels. SO! I said I'll give you some wheels and wrote a song Entitled: I'll give You Your Wheels.

You can listen to it over on the Web Site under Ray's Music.:

You were at least "asked to the dance" just not choosen Prom King this time. It should reinforce the fact that you write material that gets attention!! Keep writing and keep looking up!!! smile

Mr. Adcock -

I think in this case, Mr. Bryan is the real loser. It's a great song. Someone else will see that.

Mornin' Marvin:

Thought I'd give this thread a "bump" because the final message to all of JPF from this is a positive thing. No, your song was not selected but they want more and took the time to tell you.

I don't know your writing routine but suspect you "have a song-cake in the oven" almost all the time. I keep a small box of hand-scribbled notes with one-liners, song ideas and titles as a ready made source of inspiration when the Muse refuses to come around. Mixing writing and recording with day to day activities and needs of the family is the hardest part. I find myself working into the night more and more and it creates a heavy toll on mind and body.

Someday, I'd like to have a round-table discussion with you and others about the process we go through and all of the many facets we must tackle to "churn out a song." As I've said before, it is the loneliest job I've ever attempted.

To me, pitching is the hardest part and it looks like you have a really good handle on that aspect.

All the best,

Dave

The first song on your sound click site is great

Not sure Luke Bryan listens to outside writers but

could be wrong, I know many artistes will not listen

to anything that's not written by a top pro

But Dallas seems an okay guy and best wishes

How do you find Singers in Europe and Australia who are looking for original Songs.....I find that really daunting even though there must be a LOT of talented singers and bands who don't write good songs....Any Advice?

Dave,
Yes I usually have at least one song that I am working on, and I try to demo a new song at least every couple of months. I don't have as much "sit down with a guitar" time as I use to have so I try to make the most out of the time I do get. I am always working either pen to paper, on a computer, or going over lyrics in my head as I walk and as I am working. Music and lyrics are always with me one way or another.

Matt,
I have had a few indie cuts in Europe, but nothing ever came out of them as far as royalties are concerned. These were cuts usually procured through different publishers in Nashville. I really don't know how to go about pitching in Europe or Australia on my own. Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated.

Best,
Marvin

In general I find them by watching some SKY TV Channels

Obviously some are better than others If I think its a voice i can write something for or even fit something I have already written
I get their gig list and if I dont know the home address
I send the demo to the venue via the management

If I can get to the gig I give the demo in person
I will let you to know of any positive leads Thanks Barry and Marvin
