Mike, Newbury was one of the greats and I never understood why he never garnered more acclaim. 'San Francisco Mabel Joy' , '31st of August,' 'She even woke me up to say goodbye.' I could go on and on, but I gotta go find the story you mentioned. Thanks for the tipoff.

I don't think this is good advice.
Of course I do agree that songs should feel human but at the same time do not forsake creativity. If you're writing for pure enjoyment do whatever you like. If you're competing with other writers for holds you need to be clever in writing and music. Just don't be too clever. Keep it subtle. The best songs have the right amount of both.

Newbury's advice, like his music, isn't for everyone. He wouldn't fit in today. He barely did in his time. But public taste never defines true genius.

hey Aaron,it seemed to work for him though.I posted this just so people can understand how some writers write, just like the advice Bruce gave.I think it's interesting to see how pro's write along with hobbyist like myself. Some people take these ideas and find out they work while for some it doesn't.To be honest,i write about 90% of my lyrics as Mickey described, for the most part.I'd love to read how others write.

“The first thing I would tell you is that you don’t learn to be a songwriter, you are a songwriter,” he emphasizes. “You must place the emphasis on the need to create. Don’t worry about whether it’s commercial or not, because if you work long enough and really try to write what is inside of you, eventually you’ll write the things that will have commercial acceptance and earn you a living. If you start to write from the conscious brain, you’ll be writing formula crap that’s gonna be something that might make you money for a short term, but it will destroy your creativity. Success is when you get what you want. Happiness is when you want what you get."
God, I miss Mickey. Thanks for the article Mike.
Regards,
Bob

Hi Michael and fellow JPF'rs:
Thanks for bringing Mickey Newbury up... and for posting his version of "American Trilogy." I believe I enjoyed his version more than Elvis'.
At least now, we know how he sings... and I'd kill for his vocal skills. Like most of the others, I don't know much about him 'cause I keep my head down, grinding away at the process of creating songs... but I'm going to do some research about him to satisfy my curiosity.
I wholeheartedly agree with what you emphasized about what he said about songwriting. Sure it's more complex than that oversimplification but it is important to write what you know and feel... and, if not, write whatever the muse leaves at your doorstep.
Thanks, 90db... for your input. Whets the appetite a little more about this guy.
All the best,
Dave

Try to write to a formula and it will sound like it, let your natural talent take over and see what it gives you. There are certain basic rules to follow but don't let them be your prison.
