OLD CAR SMELL
http://www.reverbnation.com/daviddreuter/song/22136183-old-car-smell Old Car SmellI rescued her from the Kudzu and that Alabama Sun Where my grand daddy parked her when her runnin’ days were done She’d been frozen in that spot since the summer of '71 Just collectin’ rust She was a shiny Plymouth Fury born back in ‘55 But that shine's been gone for a long long time There’s so much of who he was that still lingers inside Under all that dust Well there ain't no way in hell I'd clean her up ‘Cause you don't wanna lose the good stuff Like that Ash Tray full of Winston’s and half smoked Swisher Sweets An empty Fifth of Makers Mark hidden underneath the seat Pine shavings on the floorboard from his years at that sawmill And that Aqua Velva bottle that turned over and spilled No I never got to meet him but I think I know him well From that Old Car Smell I can feel where his hard hands wore that steerin’ wheel smooth See that hole in the carpet made by the heel of his boot I can almost hear that radio cracklin’ out a Gospel tune On a Sunday drive There ain't no way in hell I'd clean her up ‘Cause I ain’t gonna lose the good stuff Like that Ash Tray full of Winston’s and half smoked Swisher Sweets An empty Fifth of Makers Mark hidden underneath the seat Pine shavings on the floorboard from his years at that sawmill And that Aqua Velva bottle that turned over and spilled No I never got to meet him but I think I know him well From that Old Car Smell When I flipped down the visor a letter fell to the floor From a new bride to her soldier fightin’ that Korean war I swear I could smell Perfume on the page I guess something’s never fade Like that little green tree hangin’ on a string danglin’ off the rear view And that lollipop in the glove box from the Farmer’s Bank drive-through No I never got to meet him but I think I know him well From that Old Car Smell Collins, Daye, Reuter © 2014

David--
My friend Billy Joe Childress had one like her--Push button gear shift on the dash--
We had a ride share back then even when gas was 20 cents a gallon--After work at the airport, we'd stop and get us a couple of quarts of red top beer to help forget the hard day!
You have a great story here--sounds good!

Long time no see/hear. Looks like you haven't lost the touch -- or maybe you have even gotten better. Super story, nice take on the subject, for sure. This is a good one.

It does read like one of mine. It was posted here in 07 and it's on lyric board three. We demoed it a few years back.

Absolutely beautiful and detail-rich song. My grandpa didn't do any of that stuff but the song none-the-less brought the memories flooding back. Every single verse is packed with rich images and details and the part at the end about the letters in the visor is a killer. It's a great song and the only thing that I'm not absolutely crazy about is the title line. The memories mentioned in the song go so far beyond the sense of smell that I'm not sure that the title or the title line as it's used in the chorus does the song the justice it deserves. Just a thought. It's one of the best lyrics I've read in a long time and I would have been proud to have written it. Very, very, very nicely done. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Thank You Kevin Emmrich !!! Good to see you're still here and thank you for your kind words. I'm still working hard at it every day. I'm living here in Nashville now learning Humility and Songwriting at the same time here. I don't post much on line anymore but had some free time this week and wanted to start catching up with some of the friends I've made on some of the songwriter sites. I have a couple partners in a little company called BIG TENT. We're on Facebook if you wanna see what we're up to: https://www.facebook.com/bigtentnashvilleWarm Regards, David

What a fantastic lyric! Also, a great performance. I realize this is probably a demo, but I can really hear a full band performance here, with a subtle addition of instrumentation as the song progresses.
Great write.

Dave Thank you for the listen Dave ---- It's just a work-tape we recorded, not really a produced Demo ... Thanks for your comments !!! David

David, I'm glad you're learning humility in Nashville. Here's an opportunity to learn a little more. This thing is really, really close in concept and structure to mine with the exact same title. I know you know who I am and are familiar with my stuff. Here's what you're not learning in Nashville...a lot of your imagery has nothing to do with scent and the 60 year old letter that still smells of perfume is completely unbelievable. Hell, if the perfume was that strong in 52, he should've taken it to MacArthur so they could've dropped it on Pork Chop Hill and wiped out the enemy.
Leave my work out of your writing process.

Great Recording, Great Vocal, Great Story and Lyric, Great Melody abd Arrangement.
Don't think the hook is strong enough(musically) and it's a bit verbose to be a pop song. You dont have that much room for all those lyrics.
Good nonetheless

Leave my work out of your writing process. Hmmm, I thought you were the co-writer on this based on your original comment. I just looked over your lyric on lyric board 3 and this is a totally different song. I think david did a bang up job on his story and the perfume line might be a stretch -- if you think about it too much (plus he really didn't say he could actually smell it -- ha, ha). It didn't come across as out of place when I first read the lyrics. Titles are re-used every day and you can't copyright a title. David's song is a brand new tune about a totally different topic. There isn't any reason to try and cut him down for it. Humility is a good thing to learn.

It only comes in at 3:42, and everything seems to have a place in the story. It is longer than I like to write, but I would not contemplate cutting it down unless I was asked by someone who wanted to record it!

It's not a matter of legality but right and wrong. Hell, I wrote a few songs with Collins years ago and they're both really, really knowledgable about my stuff. And while you can't copyright a title, everyone in Nashville knows a clever hook is half the work. And the image heavy structure is exactly the same as mine. I could be wrong about this but I think I caught this guy doing the same thing a few years ago. I posted a lyric with a line about a bent Pall Mall and a few days later something of his turned up with the same phrase.
I'm not just posting lyrics here out of boredom. My co-writer had this demoed and if these guys are playing this at open mics in Nashville, it'll obscure our version since we're hell and gone from there.

It's not a matter of legality but right and wrong. ... Couch, the two lyrics are nothing alike -- period. Except the title. I get it, though, but dang it is hard to remember where titles or concepts come from. If the two lyrics were even a smidgen alike (yea, he's got a standard verse - prechorus - chorus thing going), then I can see an issue. But the story is 100% different. OK, I'd be bummed if someone else came out with a song that was unique and had a title of mine, but what can you do?

Well, We have MUD ON THE TIRES and MOOSHINE IN THE TRUNK and now OLD CAR SMELL. I guess the guys are trying to get back to basics. One Nit. CHANGE THE TITLE! That is if you are trying to get it cut.
