I listened on headphones only. I think the recording quality and mix, etc. is very good. I don't think anyone would feel ripped off. I will listen tomorrow on my studio speakers.

I thought the mix and overall sound was pretty good under headphones. Good luck on your project!
You can keep tweaking them ad infinitum and still want to do more. Sometimes you just got to release them and move on to the next project (coming from someone who is still trying to put out a full CD after two years -- ha, ha).

Colin, Kevin, and Vic, Thanks for taking the time. I feel a little better now! I can get these to sound good in most environments except my car. Could you guys do me one more favor? Find an Acura TL to listen to these songs in and tell me what you think? I agree with you Kevin...I could mix these forever. In fact it's seems pretty close to forever already. It will be a huge weight off my chest getting this project done. Even though it will only be 4 songs that maybe no one will want to listen too. Still an accomplishment for me to have an EP I can call FINISHED. Thanks guys!

Sounds good to me Ricky (listening on speakers). Nice selection of songs. If you continue in this direction it will work really well. Good luck with it! Best, John

What's the problem in the car? That is usually a very good final test. Is it the bass? is it the clarity? Knowing what the problem is in the car might allow you to finalize the mix. It really should sound fine in the car. Try listening to them under headphones or via monitors in mono. See if any thing gets lost or sticks out weird. Mono is a pretty good test (but not the only one).

I listened again on speakers and I still think it sounds good. If you want something to compare it to, it reminded me of Shaft... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFvRvSxsW-I

Thanks again for the support Colin. AWESOME that it reminds you of Shaft. I've always loved that "chop" sound with guitar and wah. I know exactly which song of mine you are referring to though it is certain NOT as cool as Shaft. I wish it were! Glad it still holds up sound wise though. Thanks again!
John --- Thanks a bunch for taking the time. Good news for me!
Kevin --- The mix holds up great in my studio monitors, mixing headphones, ear buds, cheap headphones, etc... but in both my cars it is a LITTLE bit boxy and maybe slightly washed out in the vocals. The wash out would probably be reverb but when I dry it up it seems too dry for me in the studio and on other systems. The boxy sound is not horrible but enough to bother me. I have a couple of theories...
Since ALL 3 songs have the same issue it is obviously something I need to figure out. To my ears its the vocals that are a little boxy, not so much the rest of the mix. It's making me wonder if my mic/preamp setup is accentuating that boxy frequency.
It's a little tough to get straightened out since I only hear it in the cars. Again the mix sound great to me everywhere else. I will try to decrease the boxy frequency and see if that helps in the cars without hurting it elsewhere. Somewhere between 4-8k I figure.
Anyway it's SO close to my ears and seems to be OK with you guys so if I can't improve it I will move on knowing it is an issue that needs to be resolved in the next round of recording/mixing.
Thanks!

https://soundcloud.com/rickylaynemusic/fall-to-pices-test-onSo I think I fixed it! I was not going to post it but just in case you guys are curious I took out a little 400HZ from the mix. I think it not only cleared up the boxy issues but also made the instruments/mix clearer. Vox too I think. It's a very minor change to most but I think a pretty major improvement to my ears. I think from here on out I will watch for that frequency build up in the studio. Whether you get back here to listen or not thanks for the help!!!

I lisyened to fall to pices (sp -- ha, ha) and it sounded pretty good to me (on my pc speaker system, which is cheap, but actually pretty decent. Good luck on these, you have a good sound.
Was the 400hz cut on the master bus or on individual tracks?

I cut it on the master. I feel like right now its a problem on all three songs so I think it best to cut in on the master this time. I hope in the future to fix it at the mixing stage.
Thanks Kevin!

I went the route of posting recordings on a distribution site. I have a trusted mixer and basic software for multitracking. I guess the recording requirements depend on if you need that plush of a production or not for whatever market you are aiming for. I didn't post in retail sites to sell as much as to say if I have that audacity with these certain set of recordings for there to be a charge, that is what I want to get around and to better represent me. There are already enough online sources with samples and music sites to where people can say if they want to buy that or not. Nowadays it seems to be more like a donation in support of a musician that is followed, especially with how available everyone is. The only places I seem to be made to pay for what I hear is where I am told I need to pay a cover to remain in an establishment after 10 PM.
