This is my current project. It was inspired by my recent struggles in looking for a new job in my 50's. Very rough right now so any thoughts are appreciated. A Working Man Like Me http://www.reverbnation.com/bobbywaynesongs/song/21903371-a-working-man-like-meV1 I was raised in the home of a working man He was up every morning at 5a.m. Came home every night as the sky grew dim In his damp and mud stained clothes. He gave me my pride in a hard day's work And the scale that I use to measure my worth And when my turn arrived to wear that company shirt It was a life I gladly chose. Chorus: I've alway been a workin' man It's in my blood and it's who I am But lately it seems nobody gives a damn About a working man like me. V2 Well I lost my job when my company closed Almost 35 years and nothin' to show So I've been looking for work but the going's been slow No one seems too keen on me, My friends all say that I should color hair Maybe lie about my age, change the clothes that I wear But if that's what it takes to get the world to play fair I'd rather let the whole thing be. Chorus: (instrumental - Pretend it's a violin) V3 Nearly five months passed and nobody called I got tired of playin' cards down at the union hall Took a job that I once had not considered at all Delivering the morning news, Now I'm up each morning at 4a.m. Feels good to be going back to work again It's not the job of my dreams, but dreams don't pay the rent And what's a workin' man to do. Chorus: End

I think this is a really good song .... the lyrics flow very well and I can almost hear Bruce Springsteen singing them in an anthem-like manner.
Would need extra instrumentation to really bring out the potential, but this is a good one, well done!

Definitely deserving the full treatment. I could picture it as Kevin mentioned or with a country arrangement. Nice write.

Hey there Bobby!
I just really enjoyed these solid lyrics that just have to "hit home" with thousands. I can relate myself with this song. I spent 30 years in sales myself, then ventured off into business for myself. I then thought I'd get back into independent sales, fifteen years later, but the interest for a man pushing 60 had waned -- I know this frustration first hand. Your songs are always heartfelt, and that's why I've always enjoyed your work--this is a song that could IMO be taken to the next level for sure!

Bobby, Excellent song! Really nice. It stands as it is, but if I may: Maybe lie about my age, change the clothes that I wear
You can remove the "that" in this line -- I think it would sing better A great story a few of us know too well. Dave

Hey, Bobby...
Sometimes plain and simple is enormously powerful! I'm pretty sure this touched the hearts of working men everywhere. "Nearly five months passed and nobody called. I got tired of playing cards down at the union hall." Very good and you have a really good sense of how to syncopate the poetry to the music. Outstanding, Bobby. Keep it up!

Excellent, Bobby.
You are a solid writer. I always enjoy your stuff.
This one sits somewhere between Prine and Springsteen.
That's one nice place to be.
Hope things work out for you.

I'm on the bandwagon. As noted, it stands alone...and maybe its best stripped down and alone....because that's exactly the emotion that comes through, and the situation you bring out...you alone against an unforgiving world.
Got a feeling though that Floyd is going to offer you his experience which has to be a good thing!
If writing ever becomes work I think I'm going to have to stop

Bobby Wayne--
There's always a lot of emotion and truth in your songs! Seems like over fifty, everyone says we're over-qualified! I know how you feel--Many can identify with this song--good luck with the song and a better job!
Keep on writing from the heart!

Thanks Kevin. What a thrill it would be to have Bruce Springsteen sing one of my songs! As for the instrumentation, I completely agree with you and I, too, would love to hear the song with a full arrangement. Thanks for the listen.

steady-eddie. This song came from my actual experiences. I worked in Corrections for 20 years before leaving due to feeling burned out. I didn't realize how difficult it would be to find another line of work as a 50-year old and I had a lot of doors closed in my face and I eventually did resort to delivering papers for awhile because a working man's got to do what a working man's got to do. You know how much I respect your opinion so thanks for once again being so kind and supportive of my work. Bobby

floyd Hey Floyd. Prine and Springsteen sit at the grown-ups table and I'm still with all of the little kids but I appreciate your kindness. Thanks as always for your support.

This is one of the few songs that I have done that I actually liked the simple quality of and it was nice to have you validate this for me. I very much appreciate your kind words and support. Bobby

Mackie Thanks Mackie. Age discrimiation is most certainly alive and well and anyone who says differently has their heads buried firmly in the sand. Your music is always straight from the heart as well and I have always been a fan. Thanks for the listen. Bobby
