This subject has probably been raised previously but here we go again. I co wrote a song with Neil Cotton which made a ripple rather than a splash on the MP3 forum. However for the past week it has been number 1 in two Soundclick charts one of them Dixieland. How are the daily positions worked out? http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12884639Travis

They mean nothing. I reached number #5 out of several thousand entries, at least so they say, in a particular genre.
When I checked the stats, I learned that a whopping 12 people, count'em 12 people listened to the song. So 12 people listened and i was catapulted to number 5 on the charts.
And you dont get any clicks unless you provide a direct link to your song, like here for instance.
Incidentally, with that same song which received 12 listens, there were hundreds of "views" here. I dont know if people click to read the lyrics, and then not listen, or they just click to see what everybody else is saying, either way it's annoying.
If I click a link and a song is there, I will at least click the song, even if Im watching TV and not reading the lyrics.
In Short, soundclick is a place to store your songs.

That's one of many reasons I abandoned soundclick, the interface is bloated and out of date, and the stats may be accurate, but it was all too much hassle on all fronts.
soundcloud works for me because the progress one makes is readily visible in terms of followers, plays and stats......and it's clean and easy to use/embed.
and no, I don't have any vested interests or stock there....heh.

It's a Freaking Joke...... That site means NOTHING but IS a place to put up your mp3's and then you can send them from there but of course you can send your mp3 also.... IF people want to hear more of YOU they can go and listen....SO it IS good for that. Nothing is perfect and let's face it guys.......Millions of us all trying to land on the head of a pin and there is NO room for us to land even if we got there. Write songs for fun and leave the rest in God's Hands. Maybe today your wife will be on a plane and sit next to a Star Singers relative and you can get their REAL address....That is a possible break but even that is a million to one.

I love the fact at soundclick that there is still unlimited uploads and that there is the choice with the pages. I have heard a lot of good things about soundcloud.
I read where a popular television actress mentioned what are T.V. ratings or awards? That was in the context of sex or how much boobs were shown. I was the boob with my worst recording getting the highest standing at soundclick. It was not dirty, yet showed my horrible playing with the most simple influence. I guess in the end it comes down to what listeners will be able to put their ears on.
If the VIP's want exposure for their act and higher chart placement, all the more power to them. That determines chart placement. If you go to music sites that just run that on song statistics for the place in the charts over membership plan, that is often far different. But this is a medium that is for the moment and only time will tell on the song's true merit with listeners

I have to say that since I listen to every song that gets any votes on our Top 10 list, I MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer Soundcloud over all others and it isn't even close and I HATE dealing with Soundclick, especially when you have to click the quality of the song file and a new little window opens. It's really a dead site full of songs no one is listening to.
As for your 12 listeners for the #5 song, I am not surprised. Most sites such as that had similar stats but never let you know that. Soundclick probably shouldn't have either. Since they do show it, they should kill the rankings. People KNOW they are bogus. So few people are listening to ANY songs there, they've been exposed. My guess is that the site is not being run by a company trying to move forward in terms of growth, competitiveness in their field nor are they innovating on how to best serve the users. What they ARE doing is pandering to a delusion that music that in some cases is VERY WEAK, is still topping the charts somewhere. So those folks can show their unknowing friends and families "Look, I topped the charts on this giant international measure of the quality and popularity of songs, proving that my music is amazing, I am just being unfairly limited by "the man" running the music industry.
Why do I say the above? Because I have heard that exact version on not one but dozens of occasions perhaps slightly paraphrased each time. I have seen press releases (which no one will read or care about) and I have also seen the credibility damage such foolishness has caused people who have done such things from their friends and peers and now and then an industry person who rolls their eyes and often say "they just don't get it." Now, the other side of that coin is the fact that I have heard some very solid songs on Soundclick and sadly those folks are not being served at all. Since we're talking about FREE sites.. I would switch to Soundcloud at this point. They play follow up songs which let you discover new artists (I know I have, who weren't even JPF members... I listened to JPF members music and as I was taking notes about them, another song would start from someone I'd never heard of and often it was similar to the JPF member stuff and very strong. Imagine getting new fans from that ? I had multiple cases where after hearing a JPF members songs, another JPF members song would play. I think in part it is because of the connection of what people like so if they liked two JPF members songs, their site knows what they liked and send me to one of those "in common" songs. But using smart technology that is totally up to date, their are tremendous benefits.
Now I do not know all about Soundcloud. Maybe there is a cost or additional services etc. I am unaware of, but I have to say that anyone not switching to them are missing out. It is a far far more pleasant experience using that site over Soundclick or reverbnation etc. from my vantage point as a listener. I know reverbnation has many other features so as an artist, they may well be a better overall option, but as a listener, soundcloud is my favorite by a mile. I think Soundclick, not being a tech company in it for growth and competitiveness, has at one time had their heart in the right place and perhaps still do. But either they need an upgrade, or they need to be honest with their users. If they are using it to keep people who aren't tech savvy excited by their chart rankings, then that is unfortunate. But perhaps their business model depends on that. This is all just my opinion, I acknowledge that I do not use any of these services as an artist/songwriter, so from that side of the fence, perhaps you all see it much differently.

I would say that the lions share I see for posting mp3's has been from soundclick. They are the most user friendly, though it would seem.
Other sites seem to have only limited streams at 128kbs and more geared for a higher bit rate. It has made me have to travel from site to site being a tight wad for a fuller stream. I pay for where I present recordings as far as online distribution.
It is hard to say which package is better for that. But I know soundcloud seems very popular now.
SoundClick has that model to where you have to pay for what is posed. That side of it doesn't seem so bad in itself. We are all reaching for whatever corner there may be in the market. But yes, the stats are bogus. And not only with soundclick.

I can't even get into Soundcloud, they want me to upgrade my browser.I use Soundclick as a song storage place where I can send people that want to hear some of my songs.I pay little attention to the chart placements.

I think soundclick used to be a decent place for rap artists to sell their beats to other rap artists. Back when everybody who could talk, thought they could rap.
I think it did better when it was a novelty. I think they offered something to listeners for listening. I dont know what it was but some kind of value item.
Now if a company figures out a way for regular joe schmoe listener to make .10, even for listening to a track, it could become very popular.
But when they only offer you a packet of discounted product coupons of things you would never buy, how reliable could those listeners be?
I hope they find some sort of happy medium soon!
