I don't think so Ben.I've heard Spirit played with Zep in the early days, can't say if he heard it then changed it up a bit,who knows. And i know about all the other songs Zep put their name on instead of those cool blues artists but be it as it is by just comparison,i think Jimmy did his own thing on Stairway.

I can name at least one other popular song with the same chord progression.

The intro sound very vaguely similar but different enough to me. I understand that you can't copyright chord progressions.

It's a descending chromatic run over a minor chord. I think if you or any player were to play an A minor with that voicing, you might try that run yourself, as it would stare you in the face.

Page's Stairway is not just a progression though, it's a melody, an intro, and a motif, which builds into the rest of that amazing piece of music, he does similar riffing over slightly different chord variations through the song, culminating with that rockin ending which is also based on that same idea.

If there was any copying, it's a matter of happenstance and not intentional.

That doesnt mean Page and Plant didnt steal from OTHER artists though lol. They didnt even change lyrics to levee breaks and some other old blues songs, but to me that was homage, not stealing. They didnt have to or need to steal anybodys music, they were simply tipping their hat to the blues and made it into a new style.

I would bet, truth be known, Spirit probably copied or altered an existing song when they wrote “Taurus”.

When I first became interested in song writing I attended numerous classes taught by a local Grammy winning songwriter / artist. He made it very clear that stealing chord patterns, grooves, etc. was perfectly acceptable and done more than we care to think about it. He seemed proud to discuss songs he had penned and had great success with as starting out as other well known songs, giving detailed examples of how the progress worked. Much of his teaching was directing novice songwriters how to choose and re-write popular songs. He would tell a story of himself writing a song that won a Grammy. He walked up to the original artist that he had copied the song from and thanked them. That artist replied no problem, I actually copied that song from (fill in blank).

Google songs that sound alike and you will be amazed at how similar so many are. Coincidence? I doubted. Why create success when you can copy it.

well, if you could copyright a progression, then every blues I IV V song or every 50's I Vii Iv V progression would
cause the writer to be sued. Every rock artist would owe Chuck Berry money.

In fact, if you wrote a song with two chords, everybody would owe you a royalty when using those two chords.

The more unique the progression, the more of a steal it is, I guess.

It's something only other musicians realize, average joe listener doesnt hear a similarity, they might hear a melody being lifted though or some distinct part.

People interested in writing hits will steal progressions all the time, and as much as they can get away with, because they want to make money, and cash in on whatever is currently hot

It's easier to reinvent the wheel than to invent the wheel.

Here's a video that sums it up pretty good.

Humm,
1968. I was listening and learning about Classical Music so I must have missed all the fuss. Now I imagine if I tried hard enough I could probably sue everybody for some plagerizing of my music! Or better yet, they could probably sue me! Not much new under the sun. If you copy something exactly you may have a case. Filing a Lawsuit after 46 years is a bit silly.

According to the article, the plaintiffs lawyer has a past history of frivolous lawsuits and the judges aren't very patient with him.

If this case were to become a precedent, Woody Guthrie's estate would be sued into oblivion. Just an example. If you can go back 46 years, why not go back 100 years.

I don't see it going anywhere. The only reason the media picked the story up is because "Stairway" is such a well known and beloved song.

"Stairway To Heaven" also seems to be having a spike in airplay.
