Hey yazz all,

I'm investigating stage it/street jelly type platforms, because I need to gear up for some solo gigs. Don't have a web cam, but have a decent video camera, so once I get it figured out (how to use that as a webcam)....I'm going to run a series of live warm ups from my new music room.

any suggestions regarding how these things are done/what site works best/your experience with this sort of thing/what songs I should attempt ect.....would be helpful.

I'll be attempting this live web thing soon, so any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

smile

Hello! smile

I do a lot of shows on StreetJelly, so I have the most experience with doing web shows on there. I know some artists use StageIt, but I find the interface a little clunky. So I use StreetJelly.

And I love it! The community is really friendly and helpful, so you'll definitely find a great audience there. I know I have! smile Kevin Emmerich, Sue Rarick, and a few others here on the JPF forum do shows on SJ too, so they can probably give you some more tips as well.

I would suggest that you use a mixing board plugged into your computer for your sound during shows. For my online shows, I have a basic USB mixing board which plugs right into my computer and has slots for my microphones, my Yamaha keyboard, and my iPad. This way, the sound comes out really well on the other end, as opposed to using the sound on your video camera. smile

Most of the people on SJ do covers during their shows, so from my experience in watching other people's shows, I can tell you that the kind of covers that go over well are pretty much anything classic rock, 60s and 70s, and 80s as well. smile

Hope that helps! Doing live web concerts is a lot of fun, I prefer it to doing IRL gigs, to be honest. I don't have to lug my gear around and I can play right from my house. smile

The problem with stageit is people need to buy tokens in order to view your performance which means you need to bring a following willing to pay $5 (cover charge?)

Streetjelly on the other hand doesn't need anything to view but does need you to at least register in order to comment.

Cicilee gave good advice on the general set-up.

Once you sign up it would be a good idea to click on the broadcast button and use the test feature to work on your set-up. It just makes it easier when your ready to perform you'll already know your settings.

Raleigh, ya'll
I've caught a lot of shows on Streetjelly. It's a fun place to hang out. If I ever get my electronics figured out, I'll probably do it myself.

They have a lot of instructional videos, and Cecilee and Sue offer good advice. I would add, that it would be wise for you to sign up and hang out there a little bit before actually performing. Say "hi" to a few folks so that they know who you are. If you simply sign up and start performing, then you risk appearing like the new posters here who show up and say " Check out what I'm doing!" without making any prior effort to become part of the community.

And of course , somewhere here there's an "Official Streetjelly Thread" that you can use to let us know when you 'll be on.

Oh , and don't forget to have fun.

Midnite

I was doing a few shows on SJ, but once FAWM got going, I got sidetracked! I need to get back on there -- but now I have to relearn all my songs and put a set together. It is so easy to get out of practice. The good thing (for me) is that it is easy to have chord/lyric sheets up on the screen while playing so I don't have to memorize much (ha, ha -- is that good or bad?).

If you are doing just a guitar/vocal, you don't need much -- just a webcam, mic and audio interface. If you want to use backing tracks, then a mixer is probably required. Most webcams don't have good enough sound for live music.

A video camera should also work, but you probably will need some extra cabling to plug it in. Good luck, it is a lot of fun. Truthfully, live performing is not high on my list of things that I like to do, but it is cool enough every once in a while.
