BETTER HEARTS THAN YOURS
(Kurt Fortmeyer)
Dad Zone Music ASCAP

I've had love's tables turned on me
Felt warmth become a chill
I've been forced to swallow pride
And that's a bitter pill
We had an overflowing cup
Until you let it spill
Once I suited you just fine
Now I don't fit the bill

In your oyster bar of love
I got an empty shell
Now your menu caters to
A different clientele
If you don't want my business
I guess that's just as well
But I'll tell you what I'll stay right here
And you can go to hell

I've been thrown out of better hearts than yours before
Given the bum's rush and escorted to the door
I've been told I'm not welcome "Don't come back any more"
I've been thrown out of better hearts than yours

I've been kicked out I've been cursed at
Treated like a cuspidor
After lettin' someone use my heart
For moppin' up the floor
Been served restraining orders
When I dared to ask for more
I've maintained my sense of humor
'Though it's really been a chore

I've been thrown out of better hearts than yours before
Given the bum's rush and escorted to the door
I've been told I'm not welcome "Don't come back any more"
I've been thrown out of better hearts than yours
Before

Ok, Probably a good enough song but A BIT DATED! May I suggest you have the song demoed by a younger, maybe even female singer. I have at least one that I need to have a female singer do. When I get some money to spend! Keep writing.

Hi,

I love the tune and yodel! The only thing I'd change is this

"We had an overflowing cup"
to

"Our loving cup was filled right up"

The image of the overflowing cup was already spilling over......Anyway Great Listen!

first let me say that you're pretty sick on the harmonica. Such an amazingly recorded tune! You've got a voice fit for this style of music and witty lyrics to match it. "In your oyster bar of love
I got an empty shell Now your menu caters to A different clientele" cracked me up. Nice yodeling too, although i can't really be a judge for that cause i don't know anything about yodeling. I'd totally buy your album if i saw you live.

Dang, Ray! Thanks for bursting my bubble.
I thought I was going to just bust into Scott Borchetta's office and demand that Taylor Swift cut this song based on this recording of it. wink
I seriously hope you're just yankin' my chain.
This song is about fifteen years old, and even then it was not in the current pop style. It would be more appropriate for Leon Redbone, Dr. John, or even Hank Williams, Jr. than for any of today's so-called "country" acts.

Hi, iggyiggy.
Thanks for the listen and the kind words.
You're absolutely right about that line. Your suggestion (or a variation of it) would make better sense. It never crossed my mind. I had always visualized the ex-partner tipping the glass over and wasting the love. I've been singing this song for around 15 years and that's never come up before. I've even posted the lyric on JPF in the past. Live and learn I guess.
Now I'll think about that line every time I sing it (wrong, of course).
I can't believe I got away with yodeling in Nashville.
Thanks again for taking the time.

Thanks, Michael.
Some folks say my harmonica playing makes them sick. I doubt seriously that I'll be touring in Uganda anytime soon, but my new album will be out in a couple of weeks. It will be available through the usual online retailers, and I will also have it available for downloading through my Bandcamp site. The record is called "One More Night In Nashville" and it contains 11 songs encompassing a wide range of what could be loosely termed as country music, although not by today's standards.
BTW, I wrote this song years ago, even though this is a new recording. Here is a live recording done at a bar in Chapel Hill, North Carolina back in 2001. The tempo is quicker than I recorded it. Enjoy!

Pretty good job on this Kurt.
Yes, the treatment maybe a little dated but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
Love the lyrics.
Vic

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

Seems like it has a little "new orleans" feel in addition to that texas influence that Jimmy Buffet used when he was becoming Jimmy Buffet (ha, ha).

Good tune, I am sure it is a good live number. Good luck on your CD that is coming out soon. You got it going on! Very nice hook line, too.

Thanks, Vic!
It was a conscious decision to record it the way we did...sort of like a period piece. All of the players except the trombone player (the 19 year-old son of a friend of mine) and me are top-notch touring musicians. They're playing on every song on my new record, and every song has it's own feel. This is the only one that sounds this way.

Thanks, Kevin!
I was trying to not sound too much like Davidson County (Nashville) even though I recorded it here with some awesome Nashville cats.

Kurt,

This is awesome in my mind--it pretty much has everything going for it, so rather than point out each, I'll just say well done. One thing that did stand out that I thought was really well done was your quick transitions between verses and chorus without missing a beat or getting ahead. You see a lot of unnecessary pauses with many writes, and I'm not insinuating that every song needs quick transitions by any means.

If it were mine, I might consider "titling" the song, "I've been thrown out of better hearts before." That expression is one that "I've never heard before," but so cool and fresh, yet really basic. That line will be remembered most with this song, and using it as a title should also reinforce that--good for marketing IMO.

As an experiment with the ending, (which I like how you have it now,) I might try another ending where you kind of mumble to "her" after the yodel something to the effect "You know are you sure you really want me out of here honey." (find the right words) It might be humorous to see him kind of childishly express that he "really" doesn't want kicked out. Just an idea, not sure, and it may not be as good as what you have, but might be worth experimenting with. I just heard it in my mind a bit.

This will be a memorable song on an album for sure and one that a listener just wants to participate or sing along.
Loved this song, has kind of a combination "Americana/Modern Country feel."

steady-eddie.

Howdy, Steadward.
Thanks for taking a listen. I'm glad this song could stir up your imagination.
I have played this song for many years. That's probably why it flows so smoothly.
I used to call this song "Thrown Out Of Better Hearts". Somewhere along the way, I changed it. I don't recall why, but I must have had a reason. (I usually take things related to my songs seriously, even the silly songs.)
I'm probably done experimenting with the recording of this tune, but if you want to record a version with an alternate ending, feel free. I would love to hear someone else's take on it.
Thanks again for taking the time to listen.

Hi Kurt,

I loved it!

I did have one random thought -- instead of "restraining orders" maybe "carryout orders." It's just a small thing, but the restraining order makes me think he's doing something over-the-top wrong, instead of just regular love-gone-wrong stuff!

Hi Kurt

I thought it was clever/excellent
I also think that GOOD songs can't be outdated.

Thanks for the entertainment.

Hi, Lisa.
I had a random thought one time, but I managed to ignore it. wink
Thanks for your suggestion, but I'm pretty sure " served restraining orders when I dared to ask for more" paints exactly the picture I'm looking for---a guy who keeps coming back and won't go away until forced to by the legal system.

That's some pretty high praise coming from a guy who sets the clever/excellent bar pretty far up there.
Thanks!

Great tune Kurt! Oh.. and you're less of a cuspidor and more like a troubadour IMO!

Now for something completely different... Yep, definitely Taylor Swift material. smile Nice flow lyrically and it's very easy to listen to your vocals. Except for the yodeling. Yeah, not into that at all but it magically fits in. Great hook too.

it does have a touch of dixieland as Kevin mentioned, Mamas family theme, a dash.

Really cool song at any rate nice bar tune.

But I REALLY like the song that followed "in that box" I usually click off after the song in question plays. Kept me listening.

"Except for the yodeling? EXCEPT FOR THE YODELING?"
Way to hurt a guy, Ricki. wink
That's the best part of the song (well, other than the trombone parts and the backing vocals.)
Thanks for listening.

Love it Kurt! Hook is great, and this almost has that barbershop quartet kinda feel to it. Loved it, though not as much as My Dog Jesus which is still my favorite of yours! -Tim

Some of the finest writing I've seen, Kurt. They should include this song in the curricula of "Songwriting 101"......Don't get no better!!!

Congrats!!

Kurt,

Good write. And an enjoyable listen.
A fun production. The whole thing had a Statler vibe to it.
Ah... the good old days...

Good luck with the CD!

I loved this song. Awesome hook. "Cuspidor" lost me though. I had to look it up. You did a rise on the line "Now I don't fill the bill" then you went back to verse instead of the chorus. You've got AABABCB. Have you thought of tickering with the structure? - Like ABABCB then follow with the instrumental part you currently use as a musical bridge. Your "C" bridge could contain the ideas you currently have in your 3rd "A". But cut back the pace, shorten it to four lines and musically bring it to a climax. As it is, it's very good. But I really don't feel there's a climax yet.

Why would I want to do all that? I'm writing for listeners, not musical theorists. Sometimes it's best to leave well enough alone.

Good tune...and even though the comments sort of went along the way of "being dated", I don't completely agree with that. Yes, I could hear the Statler Brother feel to it at first....and yes, I could hear an older style of Hank Jr as well......BUT, the artist that really could knock this one out of the park on radio today I think would be Toby Keith. I think it fits his vocal, his style, and think that it is perfect for him......good luck with it Kurt, and thanks for sharing a fun little song. Totally enjoyed the listen.

Hi, Fred.
Thanks for listening.
I hadn't thought about Toby. My across the road neighbor does his album covers. Maybe I can get him to talk to Toby's people for me.

I don't think you can put a date on good music and this one definitely qualifies as good music in my book. The arrangement is terrific and the writing absolutely stellar. The writing alone, with it's unique phrasings and content, gives the song a more contemporary feel that I really enjoyed. I'm not sure about the use of the term "restraining order" because I think it gives the singer a darker vibe than I wanted him to have, but that's a very small tic on an otherwise awesome production. Well done.

Thanks, Bobby Wayne!
I don't know about "contemporary"...I wrote this song about 15 years ago.

I'm an evil guy. wink (Not really, but I have found the most interesting stuff lingering in dark corners.)
I would hope that the tongue-in-cheek delivery of the subject matter would allay anyone's concerns about what kind of guy the singer (who, as it turns out, is me) is.

Hi, Michele.
Thanks for the kind words.
I'm getting some airplay in Australia at 88.9 in Tamworth and also at Yarra Valley FM.
My new album "One More Night In Nashville" (which includes this song) is available for download at my Bandcamp page, and physical copies will soon be available from CDBaby. It will also be available on iTunes eventually.

A really fine write with an absolutely killer chorus. And it's all surrounded by a top notch production. "Dated" means nothing, zip, nada, to us when it comes to music. There's not a decade since the 20's that doesn't have genres and styles we dig. Much enjoyed this!

Hey Kurt,

I don't see a thing wrong with this. While I have no music biz experience (as long as playing in a garage band doesn't count), I just can't see how this could miss. As Eddie said, it has everything going for it. It is catchy as can be, has a great hook, and just killer lyrics. Whats not to like?

Great stuff Kurt. Love the lyric and the musical treatment. I love Western Swing. The last chorus is a pleasant surprise with the harmony vocals and the tongue in cheek humor.

Thanks, LSB!
Joe Caverlee (Tracy Lawrence's bandleader) did the backing vocals. I usually share my ideas with him, but tell him to use his instincts. This was all him. I think he was inspired by the trombone parts and the way I was singing the lead part. I almost lost it when I heard what he had done. He's my hero!

Thanks, Mike!
I've been wanting to do an arrangement similar to this for years. With more time and money at my disposal, I would probably have brought in a clarinet player and maybe some more brass and percussion to get that New Orleans second line feel. As it is, with the exception of the trombone player (the 19 year old son of a friend of mine who was home from Tulane for Christmas break) I used all the same guys as on the rest of the stuff on the record. They did a pretty good job of capturing that sound.
I am pleased.
Glad you're diggin' it.
