A backwards love song. Hope you enjoy it.

Comments encouraged.

UP TO NO GOOD AGAIN

you say it's no good to look for a heart
that won't turn and run when the trouble starts
it's simply no good believing in love
sooner or later it ends
be that as it may
i'd have to say
that i'm up to no good again

you wonder why.. we try to make it work
someone always gives up; someone always gets hurt
you don't believe that love can last
it's a game only fools try to win
well, if it's no good to feel
a love so real
then i'm up to no good again

if it's no good to hold you
if it's no good to love you
and whisper your name to the wind
if it's wrong to believe you're the only one
then i'm as wrong as i've ever been

how can it be no good to dream
and no good to long for what's meant-to-be
can it be no good holding on to the hope
that your heart will someday let me in
well, if that's the case
i'll have to face
that i'm up to no good again

if it's no good to feel
a love this real
then i'm up to no good again

Have at it...

Very nice, Floyd. I love the arrangement of the strings and the way they come in and then swell which lends tension and later release as they drop back in the mix. Did you produce this or a studio? Sounds pro to me if you did it yourself. Especially the timbre of the vocal.

Floyd, You've got a great hook here. And the music works. I'd like to see you sharpen the lyrics. You have some place-holder lyrics that need to be replaced if you want to get the most out of the song ( i.e.: be that as it may / i'd have to say / that i'm up to no good again; you wonder why.. we try to make it work; etc.) But your off to a fast start. I enjoyed listening to it.

Bill - Thanks. A concise, well-written review. I like it!

Dan - thanks for the listen and the input. What you are calling "place holder lyrics" are actually essential to the meaning of the song - so not place holders at all..

John - I certainly appreciate that. If I can elicit such a "review" from you, seems like I "got something right"...

Michele - sorry you had problems - is it that the site won't come up or you can't get the song to play?

Nicely done again Floyd.
I agree it's a real good hook.

Hey Floyd,

Tremendous write. Great lyric, but it is your vocal here that blew me away. Great delivery on this tune. Congrats.

Hi,

I love the hook and your GREAT vocals REALLY knocked me out in this part....

if it's no good to hold you
if it's no good to love you
and whisper your name to the wind
if it's wrong to believe you're the only one
then i'm as wrong as i've ever been

"if it's no good to feel
a love this real
then i'm up to no good again"

Not stilted, not maudlin, not "intellectualized" -- just a clinic in the stark beauty of simplicity. IMO, this is w/o a doubt the hardest way for most folks to write. Simple is not easy nor is it mundane when done like this. Oh, then there's the outstanding melody, vocal, mix and arrangement to go along with it. Another fine production (have I said that before?)

Hey Floyd,

I'm trying to catch up, a little behind with my listens. This production seems to have a bit more power and warmth--new equipment or technique?

I really think you're going to run in to a problem here with your writing; as your music/productions along with performance are consistently just too good. What happens is you'll write a decent song for most, but will be sub-par in keeping up with the monster expectations that you're creating for yourself! -- Maybe you should back off a bit, throw us a so-so melody, try to sing off pitch a little now and then. Oh yea, and sing a couple songs when your congested!

Fabulous song Floyd. -- You know I'm "pullin yer leg!" I'd have to listen to the song again to begin to critique it, as I just was pulled in so quickly that I just enjoyed it.

steady-eddie.

Top notch in every regard, Floyd. Beautiful, killer hook and wonderfully tight performance. This one is a winner!

J&B - Y'all say the nicest things!

eddie - same ol' stuff for the most part. except that it was a bit simpler than most - no drums. the piano part was done by Garland Craft who was the keyboard player for the Oak Ridge Boys in their heyday... I had a midi copy of that (he did the original at my house), so I found a piano sound that seemed good for it, slaps some strings on and let 'er roll... PS - working on some sub-par stuff now....

Lisa - will a cough and a newspaper do? <winkin'>

Mike - thanks. appreciate that...

Good hook. So many familiar things about this, but I can't put my finger on any of them because they just keep dancing out of reach. This is a classic case of "I swear I've heard it before, but I know I haven't".....and that's a good thing......to me, it means you've absorbed your influences and used them to make something original.

well done.
