Link below to a comprehensive interview with Herb, Jr. Filled with really interesting content about the art of mastering/recording. Herb is renowned for his deep bass/crisp highs. His trademark touches include cutting records as loud as possible & the vinyl graffiti he wrote in the dead wax of the records he cut. Finding the inscription 'Herbie Jr' and a smiley face on your 12" single was a hand-written mark of quality. It's lengthy, but for those interested, well worth the time to watch. http://vimeo.com/66162113Cathy http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=1219037

Thanks for posting this, Cathy!
As I am in this line of work now, I do want to keep learning and getting info from such long time pros. Mastering is a lot more than simply adding compression! That is but one of many treatment and edits one can do to properly master a song or interview. So much to learn. So many factors as to each song or interview. Never just one way to master. It's an art and a technical process. Much like when I tuned pianos, I can relate to both aspects.
Thanks again for posting this. I just wish Herb got more technical, and with graphs! (Like how Ross Perot used to demonstrate his facts)! hahaha! But, I still enjoyed Herb's talking about his work. I think the host was lost after the first question! Ha! I would love to hear the likes of Mutt Lang, or George Martin talk with Herb Powers! LOL. How about Mike Caro too!? IMAGINE that?!
Take care! Good hearing from you again! Miss your jabs as you can do in person! hahaha! Been a while.
John
