It could be a songwriter, but it doesn't have to be. I have to think about this one myself. I'll post my answer later.

I would say Hank Snow and Wilf Carter, both dead now but their music lives on.That was back in the days when country was real country, not todays pop country.

Does it have to be one? Gordon Lightfoot for sure, kd lang, Terri Clark, Shania Twain, Richard Margnisun, Paul Brandt, Rankin Family, Jimmy Rankin, Wilkinson's, Great Big Sea... gosh, the list is endless. Can I put myself in there somewhere :-) :-)? ------------------ Vikki Flawith, Canadian Singer/Songwriter & Voice Teacher This bird sings at: http://www.soundclick.com/vikkiflawithBlog: http://theshysinger-songwriter.blogspot.com/Web: http://www.theshysinger.com

I guess one would be Neil Peart from RUSH. Gordon Lightfoot another. Bryan Adams is one of the most successful Canadian songwriters. I'll keep thinking!

There is one name missing here...or maybe its just me thats a huge fan...
Stompin Tom Conners, while technically not a great musician I feel he promoted Canadian pride better than anyone.
Also Dave Gunning from Pictou is a great, singer songwriter and is on his way to the top...

Ditto for Sarah McLachlan. She's the only anglophone Canadian artist I can think of off the top of my head. I'm probably in a tiny minority here, but I also listen to French Canadian artists. I'm not as familiar with French Canadian music as I am with other French music, but I do have a favorite artist: Jean-François Breau. He hasn't released many albums but I love his music. I heard his song "Tu me manques" (I miss you) while I was in Quebec a few years ago on vacation and had to get it. I eventually found the album and enjoyed the whole thing. I couldn't find "Tu me manques" on iTunes but I did find this one. You don't have to speak French to enjoy the song. Jean-François Breau - Ainsi soit-il

There's a Canadian bluegrass band I like called the Spinney Brothers (Rick Spinney on banjo and Allan Spinney on guitar) and a guy called Sean Cyr, who I found on ReverbNation and has some good French-language songs. Also like Joni Mitchell (have to, seeing as I was conceived to Big Yellow Taxi).

Oh my! I posted this 11 years ago, and now I'm back to keep it going. It's good to be back. I'm glad the Canadian Wing still exists here at JPF, even though it's not too active. I have only recently began to appreciate the talents of the late and great Stan Rogers. So I'll add him to our list of great Canadian musicians.

Isn't it in the Canadian constitution that you MUST answer Gordon Lightfoot?
