Have you guys been watching this new season of The Voice on NBC? If not, I'd like to ask you guys to do so. One of my best friends is on The Voice this year and I think you guys might like him. Check out his audition here:

Greg,

Will has talent...vocal range with pitch control and and no loss of vocal dynamics in the upper range. His look is contemporary and he has personality. That was a real nice three minutes! Wishing him lots of luck!!!

Thanks guys and gals! :-)

I'm really proud of my friend. Make sure to tune in this week and watch the Battle Rounds. Not sure which night Will Champlin's battle is on, but keep your eyes and ears out! :-)

Wow. I went to post an update on this thread, only to find that this thread had nearly disappeared to the bottom of the second page of this forum board.

I'm quite surprised by that. Maybe no one really cares about what I post or I'm just not posting topics that are interesting enough *of which I could have sworn this topic would be of interest to a lot of you, as it IS about music*.

Anyway, for those of you who might care, I do have an update.

My buddy Will Champlin has made it into the TOP 3 on this season's THE VOICE! :-)

Praying he wins next week.

That is all for now. You may go back to what you were doing.

yes Greg..... this thread did slip down the pages..
But partially because you started a second thread a short time later
If you look about halfway down page one...you'll see your thread "Who are you voting for on the voice?"

In my ever-so-humble opinion...they picked the right top 3 to finish off this season.
I'm a little more partial to Tess-Ann..., (well sometimes)
But definitely am pulling for Will.
I can always feel the emotion in his singing... (can't always say that about some of the others) (and really really did NOT like the arrangement of Jacque's ANGEL. )

Greg,

I think the problem is that very few folks are watching that show. Linda watches it, but she works 7 on 7 off so she rarely has time to post and often watches (along with me) well after it has shown on TV so checking this page before we see it would maybe ruin the results and by the time we DO see it, we'd be too late to offer relevant info.

From the earliest shows I picked the gal from Jamaica to win. I also picked the young girl to be in the final two. I figured your friend would be battling it out with the bearded guy and the other young guy with the nerdy look. I thought it would likely be either the bearded guy or your friend who would be eliminated or both but the first to go was the young guy. Interestingly though they indicated, for those paying attention, that he was one of the lowest vote getters which likely means the bearded guy was dead last. Your friend could benefit from the two girls splitting votes, but I figure the Jamaican girl will win and based on the season's entirety she likely deserves it. There were many long time industry insiders in this season including your friend and the gal who I pick to win. The younger girl is also a protege in the industry so it wouldn't surprise me to learn those were the pre-show picks of the producers. It is very easy to manipulate results throughout the season to get the final results you want. It was worse the last 2 seasons where the judges controlled who got to the final round from the start and the audience only truly picked the final winner. It was slightly better this year, but in the end, it's still more about who you know than anything. I have had many friends asked to be on the show who passed. The show is smart in that nearly all the people involved are insiders hand picked for the show from the start. I don't have a problem with it. I'd rather see real talent all season than waste time with delusional hacks like AI always does. Rarely does a season go by where I don't know many of the contestants and it's a smart promotional effort. The reach out for regional known talent. In past years they might have contacted me for contestants as many of the other shows have done. Since I had to skip the music awards for 2012 due to health issues, we didn't get to sift through all the best indie talent out there. But I am glad some of these veterans are getting a shot, like your friend who I know through you talking about him over the years. Please tell him congrats for us!

Fortunately I've written with both Greg and Will. Some great songs have come of that. Will is an amazing talent and he comes from a musical family. I don't write that lightly.

Brian, you and I both know that behind the scenes strange things can happen for a variety of reasons. Same thing that happened when you suggest me for something happened again recently when someone else suggested me for a TV show.

I also know of an amazing female singer who was contacted, then courted by the Voice, went in for the audition, then nada. Didn't get on.

TV is a weird game.

Yeah, we know all too well the insider crap that goes on Jody and you are among the victims. He's referring to a major show who asked me to send them artists so I gave them a list of names who were supposed to jump the line, miss the stadium sized supposed open cattle calls (don't get me started on that please) and go directly for final consideration to be on the show. The good news is we got many people directly onto that show and others like it. The bad news is that politics and agendas also got in the way rather than pure talent. So they were happy to take my consultation on most, including many they put on the show, but in Jody's case, they had an agenda not based on talent which screwed him over. I stopped helping them after that.

This is not to suggest that any of the folks like those on the voice are not deserving. I must say that they start with the most talent of any of the shows and I am all for taking the talent who have paid their dues for a change and not just the pop tart of the week approach. The Voice mostly focuses on road tested professionals who are working their asses off for many years (or who are so obviously qualified in their youth they do not need to spin their wheels in the political landmines for a decade) and doesn't give us a false impression that they were plucked innocently out of their bedrooms where the only microphone they'd ever used was a hairbrush singing into their mirror. I hate that crap. It teaches people to be lazy and that brutal hard work isn't needed to have any shot. (And much MORE will be needed once you've "made" it). Why are the so many on hit wonders? Because in some cases they didn't have to work for it and once they got it they couldn't begin to keep it. OR, they were only on the fringe of good enough, broke through one time never to do so again. (Other reasons: Insiders whose favors had run out, people who made it fair and square but then wouldn't play ball with the powers that be going forward, or had drug or other personal problems which tanked them and finally, those who were ruined by those who simply didn't like them or wanted "their" guy/gal to make it instead. And so the soap opera turns...

The Voice is a TV Talent show for adults... without all the fairy tale time wasting (though don't get me wrong, they TRY to set up those same old back stories which most people cringe at, just not to the level that others do and less so now than in previous years). When they go on about how tough it has been for someone, it's typically a fact that they've been working their asses off, have the talent and just haven't had a break fall their way until that show.... now.. being there sadly is just as much a sad ending for most as all the other roads.... it's a brutal business and I wish more shows were like the Voice in cutting through the overnight sensation dogma and instead using their power to give veterans or insanely talented younger artists a way to cut through the BS and just sink or swim on their talent.

I will say, in the end, that if you go back on any of the Voice seasons, you'll see so-called "battle rounds" where the CLEARLY better singer was cut loose. Some things never change.

Hi Greg:

As always, Brian speaks volumes of truth.

Regarding your friend, Will... I wish him all the luck in the world in a music career after all the hoopla is dust in the archives of history. As Al David said, "He has all the attributes needed for success in the "biz" today." (Well, he didn't say it exactly that way... but you get my drift, I hope!)

Merry Christmas Everyone,

Dave

I never knew how deep the 'rigging' on these shows were till now...
Brian has spoken of it more of a few times here but reading his in-depth post really makes me cringe...
I don't understand the need for this model, Brian maybe you can explain to us why?

This is so disillusioning to me, that there is still no level playing field for the struggling artist out here, must politics always play a part in this business?

It's bad enough we as Songwriters have to deal with this, but to hear about how the Artist in the shows have to go through the same thing on this level is just ridiculous:(
Greg, thanks for the post:)-Dana

Hello Greg,

Just wanted you and Will to know that he has fans in Florida. The guy is a great singer, and I believe that the time spent with Adam has helped and benefited him greatly. Looking forward to the finals...

There's a show called The Voice?

To be honest i'm so sick of this making a "competition" out of music, it's not supposed to be any of that. And worse, to have "judges" As if their opinion is any more valid than any tone deaf person out there. Some people like ketchup some dont. That is never going to change.

And if it were really a talent competition, we're all going to lose to your "Stevie Wonders" of the world.

I watch Idol because of the entertainment it offers, those singers are TV stars, that is their function.

Anyway, Im interested in the voice now because the young girl, I just learned is from Colts Neck, NJ. She actually lives in the same town as THE BOSS! Must be a wealthy family to be living there also.

But She's 16, she looks 26, when she is 26 she is going to be one helluva a good looking gal.

Go Jacquie Lee!

Sorry to hear that.

But, if he gained exposure, that's still a good thing.
