Hey All, I'll keep an eye on this to update this message whenever someone let's me know they've got a show coming up...All Eastern Standard Times: Sue Rarick: Sue's performance last night, Oct. 25th, was her last for a month or so, while she gathers up material for what she's dubbed "Season Two". Rumor has it she'll be back in early DecemberCecilee: Seems to be taking a bit of a breather also. Stay tuned.Kevin Emmrich::Today, October 26th, 1:30...Must not be any college games he's interested in....Here's their Homepage link...Just "right click" to open it in another window so it's easier to bounce back and forth from there to here: http://streetjelly.com/At the top of the Homepage, if someone is "Live" the screen will show that, so there's no need to go searching if someone is performing. At this time, Sue has Friday evenings normally scheduled, and I believe that Cecilee has a "regular" slot, but will have to find it before I can post it. You don't have to sign-up in order to listen, but you do have to be a member in order to chat, or vote, or whatever....It wouldn't take many JPF'ers to drop in and listen(& vote") for someone to rise right up their unofficial ranks....I'll be joining them in a couple of weeks, and our beloved Kevin Emmrich is also working on setting up a Saturday morning slot. So c'mon Folks, let's give 'em a listen...And to be honest, you don't even have to listen all the time, just show-up, and it will look like you're there, even if you only listen for a minute and then leave your 'puter on while you mow the grass or run up to the corner store...or, whatever...But of course, I would never do that..... Midnite

Thanks for giving streetjelly a boost! It looks like a really cool concept.
I am slated for Sept 7th @ 9.00am est. I will begin to show up as scheduled in the main group of pictures as soon as I actually do one performance (but I am listed on the right hand box that scrolls through the scheduled performances).
I think I will do a 3-song sound check this saturday to see how it sounds (any crackles or distortion). I'll come by and mention it in the shoutbox this saturday about 30 minutes before I go live.

Yes, Kevin, do give us a reminder. If I get the chance, I'll listen to your sound-check and let ya know if anything seems off to my very amateur ears.
I think you're gonna do great!!!....And if not "great", at least you'll be "doing", which is more than 98% of the general public will ever do. So good on you!!!

When you decide to do your test Kevin you click on Broadcast and that brings you to a TEST page.
Throw on a set of headphones and adjust your sound on the screen to the left. The screen to the right could be handy I guess but it has a delay and I have never had a problem as long as I was happy with what was seen and heard on the screen to the left.
Just go for medium volume. It's a clean signal and most folk adjust the volume on their computer.
When your ready to broadcast there is a 'Broadcast' button below the left preview screen.
Glad your using your name so I can keep track - BTW Cecille is playing tonight at 7pm central

I have done the broadcast test and during my first try the sound was awful. I had everything setup correctly -- but it was un-listenable. I closed the browser and brought it back up -- it sounded fine! I guess the flash app had trouble when I switched from the webcam mic to the external microphone.
Time for the tech guys to get working. For home recordists that also want to stream on-line, we need a 2-4 channel audio interface that also have a mixer on it that does EQ, compression and reverb on each channel. You don't need the mixer when recording, but you need it when streaming on StreetJelly.

I have an 8 channel mixer, and a Roland VS-1824 CD home recording studio thingie...so the EQ & Reverb are good, but I have no idea if they would "compress". Gonna hafta hit the technical forums:-( Gotta find out soon 'cause the Spousal Unit is taking me shopping for my birthday this weekend & I need to know what I'm missing, other than a camera. Hey Kevin, I think I can make it tomorrow morning...IF you're gonna be "live". Midnite

I think I am going to stop by tomorrow at 10am est for a "sound check". I'll probably just do three songs. I still need some major practice time because Sept 7 I am planning to do the full 12 song set!
I'll be stopping by tonight to catch a little of Sue's set. I think I have some plans, but I should be able to sneak in a few minutes here and there.

I'll keep an eye on the Shout Box, Kevin...I have a traveling nurse coming over for a job-related physical at 9:30....So 9:00 OR 10:00 should work ok for me....Because it is, after all, all about me:-)

I might have to switch back to 9am -- my wife is giving a piano lesson at 10:15 or so. I'll put it up in the shout box a 1/2 hour ahead of time.

Yep Bob gonna do a lot of JJ Cale - mostly it's going to be songs with that Tulsa sound (JJ Cale / Leon Russell) maybe a couple of my own songs that fit that sound.

Don't forget David Teegarten (from Tulsa) wrote "Against The Wind" that Bob Seger recorded.
I lived in Tulsa. Leon Russell bought an old church and made a recording studio out of it. He called it "Shelter Records".
David Gates from "Bread" was also from Tulsa.

Hey thanks for posting about me playing! I ended up not playing though a few days ago because something came up and I wouldn't have been home in time. Kevin, I'll make sure to check out your show! And it's great to see the site getting some attention, especially here on JPF. I LOVE performing on this site! I've been performing on there at least once a week since April and I love it! It's pretty much the only way I do gigs because I don't have to leave the house. I don't really have a regular slot per say. I used to but then it got taken up by some of the other performers and I prefer being on there when no one else is. It's usually in the evenings during the week after I'm done writing and doing stuff around the house during the day.

Sue: Thanks for playing! Your volume was on the low side -- gotta crank it up a bit. I guess you are using a dynamic mic -- whenever you didn't speak directly into the mic, your voice got lost a bit. I made the mistake of switching (briefly) to the other guy and he about blasted my headphones off my head -- ha, ha!!! ... and I prefer being on there when no one else is. ... Ha, ha -- I feel the same way! Maybe 9am will be too early, but I will have to wait and see.

Great job Kevin! Seriously! The sound was comfortably on the high side. By that I mean, I didn't need my laptop's volume on high. I kept it just above the middle.
As to the camera angle, I'm just wondering if a foot farther back would let you get in both your hands and head? I agree about people liking to see what the hands are doing, but they were cut off at times too.
In any case, nice job!

The mic was a MXL V63M condenser. I got it for $50 on sale and I use a $29 Art TubeMPStudio preamp for phantom power. If you are going to have one mic to capture both the vox and guitar, an inexpecnsive (but good) condenser seems to be the way to go.
I'll try and move back one foot next time. Of course, I don't have the songs memorized yet, so I have a word doc on the screen to read the words and chords. I gotta be able to read them (ha, ha)! The real goal is to memorize them, of course.

I have got to pay more attention to time zones...Went to listen to you @9 am ......oops your 9 am is my 8 am. Will catch you next time Kevin.
The volume was an oops moment on my part. I nudged the dry/wet mix on my monitor and it was loud here but definitely had to be low on the broadcast.

Bob,
Was there any distortion at all? If so, I can knock the recording volume down a bit. Distortion is the enemy of all live/recorded music! That is why I would like to have a compressor available. A decent compressor/limiter would take care of all that for me.
No problem Sue, 9am eastern time is a tad early for a Saturday!
P.S. I'm addicted!

Not a single ounce of distortion at all.
Addicted, eh? Glad to hear it...I'm still getting the gear(& courage) to get set up....But hopefully by the end of September.

So much time and innovation is spent on these types of sites, Why cant they get one that serves a regualr audience.
I dont know alot about this, but it seems it would be like a soundclick for video. The only people watching will be other songwriters, if that, because they are signed up and have accounts.
I guess it;s not bad for practicing your live skills, but ive yet to see a program that anybody and anybody can enter and have real viewers/listeners listening.
Wouldnt this be the same as putting a live video on youtube and telling people you know what time you will be on?
Shrugs.

Live streaming YouTube shows here: http://younow.com (I think YouNow is associated with YouTube -- but I can't really get a definitive answer). Getting viewers is the age old battle isn't it. I don't think the internet makes it any easier -- so much competition. http://www.stageit.com might come close (but you still have to get "known"). No sense crying about how tough it is -- just start doing it.

I didnt think i was crying, perhaps I was, I do get emotional over such things, but I do wish somebody would invent a system of real viewers. Seems the only people who make out are the makers of the sites. "You use a token on me, and I'LL use one on you"

...but I do wish somebody would invent a system of real viewers.... I think YouTube has done that perfectly. In the audio only world you have pandora, spotify and a few others. What you want already exists. Of course, if you want them to listen to your music, then that is another battle.

Looking forward to hearing you play live on Saturday, Kevin! Update to this thread: Sue is set to play this Friday, September 6th at 9 PM EST. I caught a few minutes of your last show and hope to catch more this time. I'm pretty much always home on Friday night anyway. I'm a very exciting person, I know. Tonight at 7:30 PM EST I'll be on StreetJelly playing a mixture of French songs, including one that switches back and forth between English and French, some unreleased electronic tunes, and even a cover I've been teaching myself to play. Nowhere else will you hear an American singing original songs convincingly in French. Setlist for tonight (subject to change, but they're what I'm thinking of playing). Most of them are songs you can find me playing in one form or another on my my YouTube channell: 1) Long Distance Love (Closer) 2) Far From Simple (b-side) 3) Take This Love 4) Human Again/Forme humaine 5) Viens ici mon amour 6) Doucement (unreleased) 7) Retiens-moi (unreleased) 8) Wild Blue 9) I Don't Write Love Songs 10) Fly Away 11) Broken Wings (cover)

Hey Cecilee, I should be able to come by tonight. A quick technical question. How are you set up to combine the backing track and live piano/vocal on Out Of My Depth? Are you mixing it into the computer? What equipment are you using? Thanks, Kevin

Hey Kevin, Everything I play is fed into a mixing board which then goes into the computer. My vocal is fed through a vocal processor that goes into track 1 on the board. The live piano from my Yamaha DGX-230 is fed into track 2, then the backing track is played on my iPad and is fed into track 3. And all that sound then goes through a USB port into my computer! The mixing board I use is Alesis MultiMix 8 and I've used it since my early days of doing online gigs. I like it because it's easy to use for someone like me who isn't an engineer by any means. And hey, hope to see you tonight!

I hung out and watched Cecilee last night -- quite enjoyable. It made for good dinnertime entertainment.
I want more JPF'ers to join up! It is nice seeing our own in the "virtual flesh".

There are tons of guitar/vocal or keyboard/vocal people over at 50/90 land and I can't seem to get them to join either. Oh well. I am still practicing for my 10am slot tomorrow morning. I'll should be able to catch a little of Sue's show tonight.

The mixing board I use is Alesis MultiMix 8 and I've used it since my early days of doing online gigs. I like it because it's easy to use for someone like me who isn't an engineer by any means. Hey Cecilee! In your non-engineering persona, is the Alesis MultiMix 8 THAT much more useful than the MultiMix 4? Getting closer to being set up. Buying 1 piece, of something, per week, and the next on the list is the Alesis. Care to elaborate on the usefulness of 8? Thanks Midnite

...is the Alesis MultiMix 8 THAT much more useful than the MultiMix 4? The mulitmix 8 has hi-pass filters, reverb, delay... in there while the 4 has hi-pass filters but no reverb. I only need 2 or 4 channels, but I would look at the 8 for that teensy bit of reverb that is always helpful in live settings.

Oh, and I'm guessing SJ just captures a shot and that becomes your official picture there?

The official shot is just the shot that it takes of you during your performance to put only on the homepage. You can still have an official picture for your profile that you upload yourself. Mine always turn out funky because it takes a picture of me as I'm turning a paper over or something.

It's just the Alesis MultiMix 4 USB, not the 8. I don't know why I thought it was the 8 when a simple Google image search shows up otherwise lol.

Most of them are songs you can find me playing in one form or another on my my YouTube channell: 1) Long Distance Love (Closer) 2) Far From Simple (b-side) 3) Take This Love 4) Human Again/Forme humaine 5) Viens ici mon amour 6) Doucement (unreleased) 7) Retiens-moi (unreleased) 8) Wild Blue 9) I Don't Write Love Songs 10) Fly Away 11) Broken Wings (cover) Wow, now I'm REALLY sorry I missed this. Sadly, September 4th was my birthday and I was forced to go out to dinner...Looking forward to next time. Midnite It's all good Midnite. I'm always on SJ so I'll catch you sometime.

Thanks Everett:-)
Hey Kevin! Not sure I'll be able to join the chat. Had to make an emergency run to the hardware. Will be listening on my car speakers piped from my I-phone, but might be hard to type while driving.
That's right, you'll be blasting outta my ride, cruisin' with the top down .
Looking forward to it.

Just finished listening to Kevin's debut. What a thorough success and hoot of a time! Now gotta go drain a 1000 gallon fish pond and muck it out.
Was great to see all the JPF'ers representing...And Colin for the first time dropping in.

Cecilee, Bob and Sue: Thanks so much for visiting and listening! I made a few flubs here and there and missed a few notes, but at this stage of the game, that is where I am. All in all, I thought I did about as good as I could have expected. Thanks for the support!!!
