I've recently been having fun playing live on a website called StreetJelly and about to start doing the same thing on Stageit. Both sites just stream and pay PRO so songwriters do get their royalties.

I know this sounds a bit like a plug but I've had fun doing it and people can tip you if they like the music so that's a plus.

The reason for this post is twofold. Has anyone else used these sites and what are their experiences. If anyone wants to hone their performing skills this is an option to get experience.

I have never heard of these. I am over at StreetJelly right now, listening to some young girl strum and play. What an interesting concept. All but one are "off-line".

The most I've ever seen was 3 people performing at once - Usually the folk there give each other room. You don't get a lot of people viewing which is great for new performers. PS - If you look to the upper right they have a scheduel of who is playing and when they'll be playing.

I feel bad Brian. This Saturday they had a meet-up in Nashville and it ended up being 3 1/2 hours of non-stop music they broadcast.

Thanks, Sue. I'm listening to a bar band in Kansas City, MO. right now. Taking me right back to my bar-hopping days.

I just did my first Stageit show and I am not happy about it.

I posted the show as free but feel free to tip. But when fans and friends tried to see the show they had to register and then buy tokens in order to see the "FREE" show.

On the other hand anyone can go to the StreetJelly site and watch anyone that's listed as 'On Air'. You don't need to register and even if you do register you don't need to buy tokens. It's a lot more fan friendly than Stageit. It's also more artist friendly for anyone trying to build up a fan base. Stageit relies on an already established large fan base.

My original plan was to do one StreetJelly show and one Stageit show a week. Instead my plan now is to do two StreetJelly shows a week. One on Wednesday and one on Saturday. I personally find it a ton of fun to do.

Sounds like Stageit is just out to make money off the backs of artist, again.

I think it's more along the lines of Stageit moving towards the more established performers and Staged events. Not for someone like me who is semi-retired and taking care of a sick boyfriend. For me StreetJelly works much better and keeps me in shape for the occasional gig. Or for a new performer.

Sue,

Thanks for this informative explanation. From your statements, those token values should have gone to you, not them. Did you just misunderstand it?

Brian,

I did a poor job of explaining it.

A person can buy the tokens and they have a set value. The performer gets 100% of the token value. The difference is that the amount of tokens a person buys varies with the amount of money spent:

25 tokens = $7.95 = 50.1% to the artist = $4.00 = 16 cents each token... Cost per token 32 cents
200 tokens = $39.95 = 80% to the artist = $32.00 = 16 cents each token... Cost per token 20 cents

Each token has a set value of 16 cents as far as the performer is concerned.

With my boyfriends poor health, at the moment, this is as close to a live performance as I can do. Ain't gonna get rich but it does actually help a person with their live persona.

So they are a hosting service who takes a cut and doesn't offer free viewings. I guess it is low risk for the performer at least and thus a good idea since music venues get a cut, one way or another.

You should "sell" your audience on the fact that they can watch your show at a low cost, drink their own beer or pop and eat their own food and not pay it to a bar and sit in their comfy home to see the show. I think this has lots of opportunity for those who use it right.

Brian,

One of these days I'll actually explain something correctly.

Stageit: You do have to buy tokens in order to watch.

StreetJelly: Anyone can watch for free without having to buy tokens.

It took a few posts but I think I have it explained correctly now - LOL

I've been using StreetJelly for almost two months and I love it! smile I tend to do one show a week for about an hour (though this week I'm taking a break while I work on some new songs). You can even see my profile at StreetJelly here: http://www.streetjelly.com/cecilee . I heard about that website from one of my fans who e-mailed me in April to tell me about StreetJelly, so I decided to give it a try.

Sue gave a pretty good explanation of StreetJelly and what it's about. smile You rarely see more than three people on at once, though they seem to get tons of new artists signed up every day. I'm not sure if Sue mentioned it already in the thread as well, but you can also get tips from performing on StreetJelly. 'Cause who doesn't love a little extra pocket money?? grin People can tip performers with "tokens," which equal about $0.16 each, as well as with "pins," such as Rock God, Standing Ovation etc, which are equal to about 25 or 50 tokens, if I'm not mistaken. But you don't have to pay to watch, like Sue said. I go on all the time to see if people are on and haven't tipped anyone yet. And the performer gets paid when they reach $50 in tips. I'm ALMOST there myself (about $8 away!)

Also the site owners tend to pop in to most of the shows to support the performers, which is nice. I know because they show up to many of the ones I tune into and they always pop into my shows. smile

As for StageIt, I was thinking about using StageIt before I went to StreetJelly but the set-up on the site looks confusing and seems to be, like Sue said, for more established performers. I'll stick with StreetJelly for now. smile

Thanks for the info Cecilee!

It sounds like CD Baby in a way in that up to a few years ago at least all the artists combined only sold an average of 17 CD's in total, but I knew many who made full time livings and many more who never sold anything. (One sold over 100K CD's and keeps selling). I will have to check out Street Jelly and Stageit. I appreciate both of you filling us in!

Rick,

I hate it when people mass spam folks.. especially if they lifted addresses from our site or others like ours from wholesale email address sales houses who use net spiders to lift the info and sell to companies like that. Makes me less trusting of them.

I hear ya Brian...But I just noticed this thread...Been kinda distracted lately...And just spent an hour looking StreetJelly over....I don't like the spam aspect, but it seems like there are several ways to make it work, especially for an artist(& I use that word lightly)such as myself, who only performs live a few times per year.

Gonna take me a month or so to get it together, but I intend to follow this thread and contribute as I go along.

Piggy-backing on Brian's post:

It seems like Rick is the only one, of those on this thread so far, who was contacted by SteetJelly. All the other's have heard about it from other sources, or from this thread.

So maybe it's not a e-mail list hi-jack?

Just curious...
