A.L.Lambert - No Fences <-- Click Me (please).

Backstory:
The song pretty much speaks for itself. My wife and I have the kind of relationship where there are no secrets, and a whole lot of love. I wrote this song for her about it back in 2004.

As always, give it to me straight, I can take it, I won't cry if you hate it, etc. I am already aware, however, that I couldn't keep time and sing this song at the same time if my life depended on it.

Lyrics:
You know, everyone's got barricades
They put up to survive
To keep the hungry wolves at bay
And the treasured things inside

And they've all got good reasons for
The gates they hide behind
So I know it's a miracle
What's between you and I

There's, no fences
Just sweet love and time
No fences
In between yours and mine
No fences
Nothing there to prove
No fences in between...
me and you

Now God knows that I love you
He knows you love me too
He's blessed us to be hand in hand
Whatever we go through

There's no secrets to be kept
There's nothing here to hide
It's all out in the open
Just between you and I

(Chorus)

Yeah, we got nothing here that separates
Nothing that divides
Nothing that would ever make
Us stand on different sides...

(Chorus)
No Fences, baby
Nothing but the truth
No fences in between...
Me and you

Can I call you "Al"? Heh!

This'n's a Very Good Example of something Simply-Stated that Says a Whole-Lot-MORE!!!

Great Hook, Fine Sentiment Throughout!!!

Definitely a Keeper!!!

Good Luck with it..and the Relationship that's Inspired It! Very Well-Done, Amigo!

Best Wishes & a Big Guy-Hug,
Stan

I listened to your Video Twice.
and here ya go

The lyrics are good but a little vague and need more meat to the story. What are you saying here besides the same thing over and over again.

The structure of the song is very good.
Your voice has a nice tone to it. Since you have a good voice
you could actually do less chords. What I mean is that too many chord changes take away from what could be a stronger melody. As a exercise try playing half the chords and making it up with your good vocals and adding more melody..
That is your strength, so work with it.
Less guitar and more vocal ..

I think you need to work with a click track or a backbeat, stomp pedal and practice with it. The tempo changed about 7 times during the song.

I would also say that you need to turn the Reverb down a couple notches. Again your voice doesn't need all the extra reverb. Less is more again..

My advice is probably worth the price you'll pay for it!

David:

Wow, that's awesome feedback dude, much appreciated. I will try the less chords thing - but I hear it in my head a bit already, and I think that'll work pretty nice (and may help with my timing problem).

It actually had less words originally, but it came out really (really) short (2 mins ish), so the extra verse and 3rd round of chorus was honestly just tacked on to give it more time, and another chance to pound on the hook. So in other words, I think I agree with you that it's a bit of the same thing 3 times in a row. A full band rendition could mask that a bit, by adding some diversity in the music that the lyrics are lacking, but overall, agreed.

As to the click track - no use for me. WIth rare exceptions (mostly involving 12/8 blues, of all the odd things), I can only do two of the following three things at once: sing, play, keep time. If I'm ever going to get famous as a singer (not that I expect that would happen, at least not if I don't get out and try to be one), I'ma need me a band to play it while I just sing. smile

I'll also try the reverb reduction and see what I can get. The sound you here there is mostly just a result of installing Cakewalk Sonar, and hitting some of the defaults for the various effects/mastering settings. Sounds OK to me, but you're not the first to comment that I have too much reverb, so maybe I'l listen and scale it back (if I can figure out how - it has about 300 settings, none of which are 'more' or 'less', LOL).

Much thanks, again, for the constructive feedback.

You NEVER want to mask anything as you said with more instruments. A great song will stand on it's own stripped down to it's bare bones.
I noticed one other thing that may help your timing. When you strum your guitar you seem to be using only your wrist for the most part. Try using your whole arm when strumming at least from your elbow down and keep your wrist still. This may force you to keep time better I don't know. You should ask a guitar teacher somewhere or chances are their are a few on here no doubt you could ask. I am just a self taught guitarist that probably is doing it unorthodox myself but it's worth a shot.
I started as a drummer so keeping time is more in me.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the additional feedback, again much appreciated!

Though to be clear, I didn't mean that the extra instruments would mask it (anytime the singing is going, the music should be just background in the correct key - and the singing should be the focus of the song). I was more thinking that it would loose some of the sense of the repetitiveness of it if, instead of this like it is now:

verse/chorus/verse/chorus/short verse/chorus (3mins, me singing pretty much non stop, and the verses after the 1st set mostly just fill time between getting back to the hook)

Instead, something more like this:

verse/chorus/short solo or long fill/verse/chorus/big solo/chorus (same 3mins ish, but now with fewer words)

So to break down what I was getting at technically, I was thinking that loosing some of the verse bits would reduce the amount of repetition in the lyric theme, and the musical fill/solo bits in between the singing would give a sense of break from the conversation in the lyrics (and give some pickers a fews seconds here and there to show off a bit).

Make more sense, or am I still off base?
