Hi Folks. as many members of this great site are suggesting ways of improving the membership, and also I would assume, keeping members interested enough to stay and be active. I thought I would make a suggestion.

I know this is a music site, and as such I feel its perfect as is. Ok more genre's would attract more members maybe. But also the quality of the membership, must surly attract new and active members.

I'm not talking primary music here, I am talking about the way that we all help each other on many many things, other than lyrics, music and production.

I have seen it myself, and also tried to be a part of it from time to time.

JPF is a community, and so many members have skills other than music and from time to time we help each other.

I thought that a section where we can offer up the little things that we can do for each other, that are outside the music part but help in other ways to push and help each other.

Need help with your website, ask me, I have some time and can help.
Need help on facebook, someone can help.
Stuck making a video, Sure I can help.
What about a bit of photoshop work. I can help on this as can others.

Know of a great and useful resource, outside of music or maybe a tenuous link, let us know... etc etc

etc etc.

I'm not talking about 1000, of unknowns turning up, looking for freebee's, but regular members and active persons could find this useful.

Maybe others have thoughts and suggestion for such an area. or maybe it's just me thinking stupid thoughts.

I don't mind this idea being shot down, as Its only a thought.

Anyway God Bless Roy and Helen

I agree with what you are saying Roy, and applaud you for sticking your neck out so to speak. I think a section for help with music production/writing/web networking/ and other topics would be a beneficial addition for new and old members. It should be in a format "one on one" assistance, as most folks want to ask what they may feel are "stupid" questions. New and young songwriters may be more inclined coming here if they can have some privacy getting basic help with their songwriting endeavors. Where do you draw the line for helping some however, because some have more time to give than others, and you can only help so many in a reasonable amount of time.

Maybe having a "I need help with _________" forum. The forum would have certain guidelines for the help offered perhaps. Individuals can always take consulting to an advanced level should both parties desire privately. (Does JPF want to offer pre-paid advanced classes)? I don't know. But it would be great for songwriters to have access to basic help and basic questions pertaining to songwriting, production, networking, and marketing of music within JPF through a more private forum. As with any new ideas or changes, they need to be well thought out before implementation.

I think you have a great idea.

Thanks for joining in the thread., Lots of thoughts and ideas from you. Lets see if anyone else likes the idea. Of course Brian has the final say, and maybe the idea is not everyone's cup of tea.

As I said it was just a thought and I have no idea if or how it would work. May just be a fleeting idea lol

thanks though for the comments

Hi Roy, You're talking about something that happens here anyway. That's what makes it a community. When Heather needs quick money for college, she offers a discount on her demo's. A good deal for both parties. I've done the same thing.

That's why this site is unique. You offer your skill and service in good faith to someone who can't otherwise pay someone else to do it, and you should be commended for it.

Sub (Mike Caro) mastered one of my songs once only because he liked it. I didn't ask him to do it nor paid for it. He just liked it. That showed his good faith in my music and he knew who I was.

I think that this site has been doing quite well, It takes awhile to get to know new comers. You can tell who is real and who are not.

I agree Ben with what you say, and the giving is to be applauded on every level.

So often we help each others, and it is mostly spontaneous I think.
We see where we can help someone and we do it. That's the community working.

I was thinking more along the lines of letting others know, things that we can do, maybe pro-gratis or maybe not, that others may not be aware that we can do, instead of waiting for someone to ask for help.

Maybe there isn’t a hidden pool of talent, non music related, I don't know. But I did think it was worth discussing.

Ideas are just that ideas.

Thanks for adding to the topic

God Bless Roy and Helen

Roy, you've helped me several times,as others here have, for which I thank you all.I have very few skills or gifts to offer(outside of songwriting and some may doubt that gift, LOL)and I hate being a taker all the time with little to give in return.I know a little about farming if that is any help to anyone.I'm a Christian but there is a lot I don't know about that subject, but what I do know I'm happy to share.Other than that,I am a dunce.LOL

Interesting idea, Roy.

Not sure about the logistics, but a place to start would be to have each "volunteer" list the skills he/she has available. That way, someone who needs help knows who to ask on a one on one basis. Also, it would be a place to mention whether it is free advice or a paid service like Heather's vocal tracks mentioned above.

Ditto Colin. A little basic organized structuring of help & services available always motivates those that want to seek help or cooperation especially for those that may not know many of the folks here at JPF. There should to be some "quality control" over who is giving direction or advice if that direction is coming from JPF--because it will reflect JPF directly--that could be an area of concern for Brian.

Maybe having a specific forum for answering questions from a "menu list" where members in general can offer answers-- which may produce several answers or opinions. Then for more "in depth" or specific help, there could be an area where you submit that you would like contacted for some help/advice--then those that are appointed to assist in those areas can contact the person requesting some help. A moderator could make sure that the person gets some help if the request sits too long. Another list of services for hire could also be in a separate menu--which an interested party could contact if desired.

Ben is correct that these things are already going on, but primarily with those that have been around longer and have the private connections. Ambitious people will get and find help, those less so may be more reluctant or unsure where to start--those "may" be newer members "not" feeling a connection with JPF or potential newbies that are both important to become more active with JPF--which in turn may bring their creativity and their network of music friends to JPF as well. Human nature especially these days is very impatient--people won't hang around long without finding relative satisfaction.

I myself have had help from Colin, as I know him and feel comfortable, where I might be more uncomfortable asking Roy for some help, as I don't know him--but now that Roy has stuck his neck out--he won't be able to get rid of me--just kidding Roy!

Hi Everett

thanks for joining in. Funny you mentioned farming, I have this window box...

Seriously, the idea was for a giving and offering place, not what can I get, so having nothing to offer doesn't apply. I may need a prayer on a personal level one day, and you can bet I would ask you.

But aside from that. I don't know about others, but I actually enjoy helping others and some things that I do, I do remarkably quick and easy. Whereas it may take someone else 3 hours to remove auntie Hesse from a wedding picture and fill in the missing space so as to be unnoticeable, I can do it in under 3 minutes, and I enjoy doing it. That's not to say that particular skill is of use to anyone else, but you never know. I expect steady-eddie will now send me a picture of his auntie Hesse lol.

That's just a crude example of what I mean. And I am sure others are the same as me, with little talents that they enjoy sharing.

Who knows...

I remember when I wanted some jingles for my radio station, and Dave Rice did them for me, and they were great. I did a bit of work on his website and so we helped each other.
We just don't know what each of us has to offer. Sure we can post a request, but not everyone feels comfortable doing that.

I used a great voice over chap the other day (not from JPF) and I would love to be able to post a personal recommendation somewhere. Same as the images that I have done by an artist in Japan for my music videos. I am sure plenty would find her contact details useful. Personal recommendation as apposed to only offering advice when someone posts a request.

So it's not people touting themselves, but us making a recommendations in a specific forum.

Sure does need a lot of thought this idea lol.

Thanks again for joining in

God Bless Roy and Helen

Hi Roy. Once again your ideas have inspired the members here (myself included). Thank you for your involvement.

I like the "I need help with..." suggestion by Steady-Eddie. And, after reading the other replies in this thread I would like to add including a BARTER type help page. In the line of "I have this, I need that" kind of thing.

I realize that there is already a Trading Post page. So maybe my point is moot....

Peace,

Dave

I also agree with Roy's ideas. We are family here, and I think what could really help the site would be to possibly charge a minor fee to post our mp3's . This could help with keeping the site up to date technologically. We could also begin sharing our resources as far as promoting our music. if we charged a dollar to post mp3's, it wouldn't really affect any of us financially, but in the long run will help the family both survive and prosper. Just a thought....

Hi Roy,

I really like this idea. I often need help with melody.

I realize that there is already a Trading Post page. So maybe my point is moot....

Peace,

Hi Dave thanks for the nice compliment. I try to add to the site when I can.

I agree with your ‘the "I need help with..." suggestion by Steady-Eddie’
And also the barter principle, except not an enforced barter system. Just I help you, and you help someone else. A bit like the critique’s. You critique two or three and then others critique our postings. But not enforced.
I suspect things find a natural balance after a while.

The Trading post tends to be items, and for a non-musician like me, a waste of time.

But I will take that horrible ‘mole’ off the end of your nose’ in your picture if you like, maybe you can proofread something for me. Get the picture lol

Thanks again for joining in

Thanks Jackie for adding to the topic.

That's exactly what I mean.
I bet there are lots of members who find dong a melody not too difficult, and enjoy doing it.

Its the challenges in life that make life interesting, or so I believe.

Roy,

I am fine with it, as long as the person who brought the idea up takes ownership, comes up with easy to follow guidelines and makes sure the volunteers are just that, and not secretly planning to ask for money in the end before finishing the help etc. If you have well thought out plans to implement it and most importantly, the commitment to follow through with it for the long haul (like a year and then we'd revisit if it was worth renewing for another year etc.). It could even go just until the end of 2013. But it is critical that either you or someone (hopefully more than one) takes charge and makes it work, adjusts when it needs it and ensures no abuse or problem arise and when they do, that it is handled in a fair way.

I'd also request to be kept in the loop and certainly would be happy to offer what help I could short of taking it over. = ) There would likely be some guidelines I'd want to approve to avoid some issues that could arise and we'd need to include disclaimers to protect all involved.

So continue to develop your idea and let me know if you want to go forward.

We STILL need help with our main website as everyone knows. It would be nice if we could solve that issue which would likely solve a lot of other issues we have at the same time.

Hi Brian and thanks for coming in with your thoughts and views.

I will give all that you have said some serious thoughts over the next few days and see what I can come up with for your approval.

I do have a real nasty cold at the moment so am working with a cloudy brain. Still I will do my best.

I don’t have well thought out plans yet, so that’s what I will concentrate on coming up with. Taking into account what everyone has said on their input to the topic.

I think the ideal thing would be to try and make it sound and foolproof (almost) from the beginning. So let me see if I can put something together for yourself and others to look at.

Thanks

God Bless Roy and Helen

It's your idea, so no rush. When you feel better and want to figure something out, let me know.

Get well!

Roy,I would be happy to pray for you but I don't have any more "in" with God than you do or could have, except I believe and have accepted Jesus as my Saviour, and that is available for you and anyone.God is no respecter of persons because of rank or position, but respects people that accepts His Son as their Saviour.Having said that, it doesn't hurt to have as many people pray for you as possible, especially when the need is great and urgent.

Sorry that I have been away for a couple of weeks folks after starting this topic. But I have had an awful flu session.

Probably man flu, but just the same bad.

Anyway, I have been thinking about the topic and have made a 'mock up' of a possible way fit might go.

For those who have been following and have offered suggestions, please do so again as this is the next stage.

If you read Brian's input you will see that he is ok with the principle, but has stated, (rightly so) that as I started the topic and suggestion then I should put myself on the line and run with it for a period to see how it performs.

I am ok with that if interest and input is forthcoming.

I don't want to offer up things that I can do to help others and be the only one...lol

So please let me know if you will be able to add to the forum in some way either in this topic or by PM if you prefer and if the interest is there, I will let Brian know the outcome.

All so any thoughts on the guidelines etc

Below are only my initial guidelines and not cast in stone as I can't do all of the things mentioned.

Thanks in advance to all those who can add something

God Bless Roy and Helen

Hi Roy

Just looking at this and what first came to my mind is that-posts/topics quickly slip off the first page of a board....

and I wondered if there should be a sub division of HAVE HELP / NEED HELP

may not be possible with the current format ?

food for thought and I will think on

thanks for adding

Our default is 50 topics per page. That's a LOT of stuff on page 1 and if something falls off of it, most likely it's pretty old. Even on our busiest boards stuff hangs around quite a while on page 1. On a medium traffic board, months and even years can be on page 1. So I am not sure of the concern being something to really worry about. At least let's say, it is a problem I HOPE we have... there are many solutions. We added 3 Lyric Boards to ensure more than enough time goes by with lyrics on page 1 if you use all 3.
