I think one of the reasons there are more lyricists than composers is because the basic necessities of writing are provided to everyone from the start of school (vocabulary, grammar, spelling, etc). At least everyone learns the language of writing. However, it's quite a different scenario acquiring the necessities to compose music. Not everyone has the opportunity in their youth. Best, John
