My Dear Mentors and Friends.
I've recorded some of my garage performances of other musician's work (Willie Nelson, Chris LeDoux, etc.) that I'd like to share with my family and friends, but I'm still confused about copyright matters.
I have some instruction that suggests that I need to send a letter by registered or certified mail to the publisher with a clear subject line/title that says "Notice of Intention to Obtain a Compulsory License for Making and Distributing Phonorecords" but the same information page says
I must pay the publisher on a monthly basis for every download (not stream) according to statutory royalty rates.
Does this mean that I can upload and share the audio without a license so long as the file cannot be downloaded by listeners?
I'd hate to have to wait and get licenses before I put these songs on my webpage, but I want to be certain that I am playing by the rules.
Any advice will be appreciated
