I don't think anyone really understood "Purple Rain". But they "got it" in their millions. Did anyone have to think about it? Oh yeah! That was part of the attraction. The arrangement, hook and melody did the rest.
Vic For me...Purple Rain was built on the tonal quality and emotion of the lead guitar set in and against the overall mix and the tonal quality and timing of Prince's vocal line. I, personally, thought that the structure was meandering. Love the song.
