So lyrics to a song I wrote some many years ago. I was at the gym on the treadmill watching a CNN interview with a government official from Middlesex, New Jersey. Thought the idea of living in a place called "middlesex" might be fun to play with--though the song morphed from there. Anyways, for it's worth.

Middle Sex

(V) Hey, lady, turn that eye—
I’m telling you don’t even try.
Just take those pretty looks
and fleshy hooks and pass on by;
because I’m not looking for a pretty face to ask,
and I’m not waiting on some storybook romance.

(C) Because all these bodies do connect;
they’re bound by blood to intersect;
my consciousness needs to be set;
and until it’s clear I’m staying here in middle sex.

(V) Hey, buddy, save that line—
you just can’t believe I ain’t your kind;
so eager to pursue
but I’m telling you it’s wasted time;
because I’m not looking for a body I can own,
and I’m not waiting on some boy to take me home.

(C) Because all these bodies do connect;
they’re bound by blood to intersect;
my consciousness needs to be set;
and until it’s clear I’ll stay right here in middle sex.

(B) Hey, mister, don’t you laugh;
hey, lady, don’t you smile—
I just want to linger here in limbo for a while.
Have I deceived myself or cheated myself?
It gets me thinking:
“Alright, this is what you wanted, boy.
Alright, this is what you needed, boy.”
But it is really worth it?"
It makes me think
I don’t know what I’m looking for.

(V) So, mister, can’t you see
there ain’t really nothing wrong with me.
Hey, Miss Curiosity,
I’m just battling with uncertainty.
And I’m not looking for love to change my mind.
I don’t need anyone—I just need a little time.

(C) Because all these bodies do connect;
they’re bound by blood to intersect;
my consciousness needs to be set;
and until it’s clear I’m staying here in middle sex.
Until it’s clear I’ll stay right here in middle sex.
