Mentor: Anne Leighton Location:

Just Plain Media Maniac

Member Anne Leighton has been called "the DaVinci of media," because she believes that artists can work to higher levels in their careers by creating their own opportunities. And she has done that in her own career via her love of mass media. Since high school graduation in 1975, she has worked as a writer, radio broadcaster, publicist, TV person and more. She's been on the receiving end of story pitches, and she's pitched stories. She's done it all, and had a great time. When I saw her name attached to MEDIA MANIAC, I had no idea. But read on!

She began a freelance writing career in 1975, and sold her first play, REACH FOR THE SUN to Poets Repertory Theater of Long Island in 1976. In 1977 she found a part-time job at WBUZ, a country station in Fredonia, NY. She also worked at Fredonia State's am & fm stations (WCVF). Before she graduated college, in 1980, she found a full-time job, as the midday on-air personality at WZIR-Niagara Falls-Buffalo, NY. And then she worked at WRNW-Briarcliff Manor. Through the years she's helped out on Westchester-area public stations, WDFH-Dobbs Ferry, WARY-Westchester Community College, and WFUV-Fordham University in the Bronx. For most people, that would be a career, but for Anne, she was only getting started!

Her career as a freelance writer has been even broader. In addition to serving as the Managing Editor at HIT PARADER magazine from 1986 through 1994, Anne's created publications such as ACTION MOVIE HEROES, POWER HEROES AND VILLAINS, and has contributed pieces to a variety of publications including INSIDE KUNG FU/KARATE, THE MUSIC PAPER, BILLBOARD, MUSIC LIFE-JAPAN, AMERICA ONLINE, and more. Although she occasionally writes articles now for these magazines, she enjoys long-range creative projects. And she's working on a few including some dramatic projects.

Since 1994, Anne's been focused on her own project development company. Most of the company's specialties have been creating projects that she can publicize for her particular clients. They include starting a progressive rock night in New York City to help area band Ten Ton Tide become more known, creating budgets for educational videos, and carrying out press campaigns for a variety of artists including musicians Jethro Tull, Great White, Static 13, Ten Ton Tide, and dramatists Michael Wehrhahn, plus the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival.

As she progressed with her company, it became obvious to clients that she was an exceptional communicator. This led to an adjunct teaching position at Baruch College, New York City. In teaching Entertainment Publicity, Anne decided to create her own workshop series to help anybody and everybody market their business or craft. "Publicity in the twenty-first century goes way beyond print media," she explains. "It includes creating projects, using the Internet, all kinds of radio and television, and even finding ways to make money while getting yourself known."

Her workshop series has started on a small scale in New York City. And between 1998 and 1999 she plans on broadening her audience to colleges, plus folks in Chicago, Florida, California, and other regions. It's a hands-on workshop, in which she shows folks how to improve their presskits, and get themselves heard by the media that's right for their projects.

It is impossible to summarize Anne Leighton, but if I had to with a single expletive it could only be: WOW!
