Mentor John Beland

Q. You have had fabulous success and heartbreaking failures and near misses in your career. Yet you seem to be so grounded about it all. How do you keep your head life size during the high times, and raise your head up during low times, over and over again? What can we learn from you to help our own high and low times?

A. The older I get, the more I realize that success in the music business is NOT everything. Therefore I'm able to take the highs & lows with a grain of salt. I also have enough faith and belief in my talent to know that I'll do ok. It still gets frustrating but it doesn't torture me. I also had a great upbringing in my early years in Hollywood. The people who took me under their wings were solid down to earth folks... a rarity in the world of record producing. They helped provide a strong foundation for me. Finally, and it may sound corny, but I try to treat people as I would like to be treated. I do have a hot temper when I find I'm being jerked around ... but I do have a respect for people. I know I'm one lucky guy to have had such an exciting career ... and I haven't really had many "low" times as an artist or writer...luck and a higher power. That keeps me from ever getting a big head. I know I didn't get this far on talent alone...

Remember ... believe in yourself. Struggle and persist. Learn. Listen. Have a little faith. Put passion into everything you set out to do. Shake off a punch and get right up...this business is tough and a lot of talent falls along the side. But remember, a lot of talent makes it too!
